Lunchtime with the Chair of Governors

On Friday 27th January the chair of governors, Mr Young, enjoyed his lunch in the Manor Way dining room with a group of pupils from Year 4.

Year 6 Elder - Arithmetic

We have been working exceptionally hard on our arithmetic skills over the last few weeks as we aim to improve our speed of thought and mathematical understanding. During one skills practice, we engaged in a silent debate where we recorded, challenged and deepened our understanding of a variety of questions. As we were not allowed to speak, we had to engage in conversation through our written language. By the end of the session, we were able to discuss our answers, processes and draw conclusions in great depth. A great effort by all!

Year 5 Hawthorn - Musical Adventure

Hawthorn (Year 5) got going on their next music adventure today - finding the stories in music.

They listened and watched a performance on the amazing LSO PLAY website.

As they listened they wrote down words and drew images to show what they thought the music might be about.

Watch this space for when the story begins to unfold ....

Listen to the performance of Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz and see what you think....

Year 2 Sycamore's 3,2,1...BLAST OFF!

This week Sycamore class experienced what it was like to blast off into Space! We boarded our spaceship, checked our equipment and took part in a countdown to launch us to the International Space Station. Later on in the week we wrote letters to Tim Peake and even filled out a job application to become astronauts!

Year 2 Violin lessons!

Our Year 2 violin groups are making great progress. This week they made their next big step, using their violin bow for the first time! Bow holds are really tricky, and the children did an amazing job. We played games, pretended to be clocks,  and used a new rhyme to help.

Well done to all!

Manor Way Site - Organised Games at Lunchtime

At lunchtime there is always a variety of games organised which are lead by a member of staff. Today at lunchtime, Miss Huntington taught the Year 6 game involving accurate ball throwing and having fast reflexes. Beatriz, the Year 3 teaching assistant, enjoyed playing a throwing game using mini-nets and a ball with some Year 5 boys, whilst Luke was acting as referee for the daily football matches down on the lower section of the playground. We try to ensure that each day a different selection of games are offered to the children to support playing positively together and learning new skills.

Nursery - Blast Off!

Zoom, zoom, zoom we're going to the moon!!!

We made our own rockets using a large plastic bottle.

Nursery - Chinese New Year

We celebrate and learn about different festivals throughout the year. This week we have been learning about The Chinese New Year taking place this weekend.

As part of our learning we have:

Used chop sticks and rice to cook a Chinese feast.

Written numbers in Chinese and made them using playdough.

Danced to traditional Chinese music as a dragon.

Explored noodles in the water tray and painted blossom trees.

We learnt the song ‘Kong Hei Fatt Choy’.

Beech class's space mission!

This week Beech Class have been into space! We watched a real life launch and used this to help us imagine launching into space ourselves. We found out about the planets and the order they go in and we even used a pneumonic to help us remember them. We also found out about the role of an astronaut and we went through the application of an astronaut!

MW Achievement Assembly

Well done to all the children who were recognised into today's Achievement Assembly at Manor Way.

Year 3 - Multiplying and Dividing by 10

Walnut Tree class have been exploring multiplying and diving by 10 this week. They were helped by 'Zero the Hero' who came to move the numbers in the correct direction to make them bigger or smaller! We used our place value knowledge to understand how the numbers move when we divide and multiply by 10.

Year 5 Orchard Class Used Drama To Explore Narrative - Beowulf

Orchard Class have been reading Beowulf as our key text for this term. We recapped the story's key characters and events. From this we created a brief overview of the story, and then chose a part of the story to act out in a group. We thought carefully about how the different characters would stand, how they would position their bodies and their facial expressions. As a group, we then froze and the teacher tapped us to hear who our character was and what we were thinking and feeling at that moment.

Can you identify which event of Beowulf each of us were acting out?

Year 2 Spanish Club - Salsa dancing

This week we learnt 4 new words in Year 2 Spanish Club: izquierda (left), derecha (right), delante (forward) and detrás (back).

We practised the words by learning how to salsa dance. Salsa is a style of dance that is popular across the Spanish-speaking world and we tried hard to keep up with Miss Ansell!

Check out our amazing salsa moves and super Spanish pronunciation!

Year 5 Orchard and Elm - Join for a Collaborative PE Lesson!

Year 5 Orchard and Elm Tree class joined together for a PE lesson on Rugby. We developed our passing skills and worked within small teams.

We tested our pulse rate before and after our warm up and noticed the difference; we used our Science knowledge to explain why this was.

We demonstrated many of our school values: Effort, Resilience, Perseverance, Determination, Fairness, Co-operation and many more.

Year 5 Orchard Class - Mini Chef!

Year 5 Orchard class cooked up a scrumptious sweet potato and tomato soup this week!

All our ingredients were fresh and within a good budget.
This helped us learn about healthy eating and how simple and cheap it could be to cook up a delicious meal with fresh ingredients that are good for us; we hope most of you were able to buy and try some!
