Open Sound Ensemble

LSO is delighted to let you know that applications for our next Open Sound Ensemble course on Thursday 27 & Friday 28 July are now open, and they would love to welcome you along.

Please apply latest Friday 14 July.

Open Sound Ensemble is a music group for young people of secondary school age with special educational needs and disabilities, based in South London. The Summer Open Sound Ensemble Course will be back at Woolwich Works (map) in Woolwich Arsenal!

Information about the course

Working as an ensemble alongside specialist workshop leaders John and Dav and musicians from the London Philharmonic Orchestra, we will rehearse and perform our own music. We will use a mixture of both traditional and accessible digital instruments to explore sounds, rhythms and melodies, and devise new music together. We will be interacting with each other as an ensemble, sometimes following cues from the LPO team and each other, and sometimes making our own creative decisions. Instruments will be provided, but you are very welcome to bring your own.

Young people will have the option of being part of the morning or afternoon group. Please find a bit of information below about the group identities:

Morning group: for young people with a little or no prior musical experience. They might have explored a little bit of hand-held percussion (drums, shakers, tambourines) at school or in music therapy sessions, or have encountered an instrument a couple of times.

Afternoon group: for young people with more musical experience – maybe they have played a particular instrument in the past or play one now (e.g. piano, guitar, recorder) or they sing.

We will try and give you the times you select in your application form but we cannot promise this will be possible.  All young people who attend must be accompanied by an adult throughout the sessions.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss your application any further then please get in touch with Hannah.

KS2 trip to Woodlands Trust Farm

A group of children from Key Stage Two visited the Woodlands Trust Farm, on Shooters Hill, today.
They had a great time seeing all the different animals (even if some were a bit smelly!) They saw where they lived, what food they eat and even learnt why pigs like to hang out in the mud.

"Moooooooo!"

Today is World Autism Awareness Day

This year the theme is: Challenges and Opportunities in a Post-Pandemic World.

World Autism Awareness Day was established in 2007 by the United Nations General Assembly.

The aim is to increase awareness about autism, to help people develop knowledge about autism and deliver information on how important it is to detect an early diagnosis.

Autism affects both boys and girls, of all races, in all countries around the world. It is immensely common, which is why raising awareness of autism is essential.

Ways everyone can celebrate-

  • Truly reflect to see how you can support people with autism in a way that changes lives.
  • Develop your understanding of autism and help to spread awareness in your communities.
  • Support a family you know whose child has autism.
  • Getting involved in events run by autism communities.
  • Listening to people you know who have autism about what it means to them.
  • Engaging in discussions with your children so that they become aware and accepting of their similarities and differences.
One way to develop your own knowledge and understanding is to watch these videos from young people explaining what it can be like to be autistic.

Short breaks

New Short Breaks offer – activities and support for disabled children and young people in Greenwich
Information
Short Breaks are pleased to announce their updated offer for disabled children and young people, available from April. Short Breaks are a fantastic experience for children and young people with disabilities in Greenwich to meet new friends, take part in exciting activities and have fun!

From 1st April 2021, we will have 8 organisations running a variety of services across the borough. All our programmes will be putting measures in place to ensure the safety of your child during COVID-19, including social distancing, reduced group numbers and PPE where required.
The service is available to any one aged 4-17 who lives in Greenwich and has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). The programmes are designed to encourage friendships, independence and learning new skills, as well as allowing parents and carers a short break from their caring role.

Activities will be taking place throughout the summer and vary across each organisation. The only cost to families is the access fee charged by each Short Breaks provider, which ranges from £1.70 - £5 per hour (depending on the level of support that they require).

If you are interested in registering for Short Breaks please contact the team by emailing Short-Breaks-Referrals@royalgreenwich.gov.uk or calling 0208 921 3002.

More information can be found in the Greenwich Short Breaks Guide, as well as by visiting the Greenwich Local Offer page.

FREE Dyslexia support for online learning

From their website-

Color Filter

ColorVeil adds a customizable color filter over your Desktop, Internet browser, video player, document, email, or program. You can work, play, read, write, or browse as usual.

Dyslexia / SSS

ColorVeil can help people with Dyslexia and Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome. It applies a coloured tint across the screen, that can match the prescription from the optometrist.

Eye Strain

ColorVeil can reduce screen brightness, even below its lowest available setting. This helps reduce eye strain, especially at night, and can save battery on notebooks and tablets.

Customizable

ColorVeil lets you easily customize the color and opacity of the filter. For example, choose an Orange color filter to block out the blue light responsible for sleep deprivation.

Easy On/Off

ColorVeil makes it very easy to instantly turn the color filter on and off: simply click the ColorVeil icon in the notification area. Or press a (customizable) keyboard shortcut.

Portable & Installable

Run ColorVeil on any PC without installation: just download and unpack the ZIP archive. You can also install and deploy it across your network using the MSI setup program.

to download for FREE.

Messages from MENCAP and Greenlights

Are you a parent or carer of a child/young person with SEND 0-25

We are inviting you to join Charlotte and Nev to attend a series of one hour ‘Toolkit’ wellbeing series. Each session will be followed by a parent peer support session which will provide you with the space to share and be supported in a safe and private space

This is all about YOU because you are important!

During these challenging times, we need to be agile in our response to change, build resilience and maintain our own wellbeing as well as our children’s.

How does it work? Each 1-hour session is delivered through a ‘virtual training room’ followed by the next week 1-hour parent peer support session

You can join any session, but you will gain much more from attending all sessions and meeting each week with likeminded parents.

To register please click https://greenwichparentsendwellbeingsessions.eventbrite.co.uk

Any questions about the sessions or if you would like to know more about Greenwich Parent Participation Group, we would love to hear from you Carol 07852101492

BBC education support

Starting on Monday 11 January, each week day on CBBC will see a three-hour block of primary school programming from 9am, including BBC Live Lessons and BBC Bitesize Daily, as well as other educational programming such as Our School and Celebrity Supply Teacher and much loved titles such as Horrible Histories, Art Ninja and Operation Ouch.

If you can't watch when the programmes are initially shown (because you are in your Google classroom with your teacher and classmates), you can still access them on BBC Red Button, as well as episodes being available on demand on BBC iPlayer.

Also, BBC Bitesize online has an expanded offer of structured lessons in Maths and English for all year groups. ‘This Term’s Topics’ also covers other curriculum subjects and curates learning content that works for the Spring curriculum.

Visit bbc.co.uk/bitesize, click on the year group and subject and all the content is there. If your child is working below that of their year group (possibly with a Special Educational Need), this gives you the flexibility to use resources and learning (especially for Maths and English skills) suitable to their learning level.
