UN Spanish Language Day 2023 - extra ideas for you!

This week Year 3 and Year have been honouring UN Spanish Language Day which falls on 23rd April each year.

Here are some additional ideas for fun, simple activities you could do to celebrate the day and improve your Spanish:

- Sing along to a Spanish or Latino pop song

- Watch a TV programme or film which is set in Spanish

- Put your favourite film or TV programme's subtitles into Spanish and look out for cognates

- Eat some yummy Mexican food (and practise pronouncing items properly)

- Use Linguascope or Duolingo apps to learn some new vocabulary

- Read the famous Spanish novel Don Quijote (you can find English translated copies!)

- Check out La Liga football fixtures and see which team is at the top spot at the moment

Vive La France!!!! - Today is Bastille Day!

Bonjour tout le monde!

We celebrated our annual French Day back in February, but today in France (July 14th) is Bastille Day - a national holiday and very important celebration of French history and society.

You might remember learning about Bastille Day and the French Revolution on July 14th last year, but in case you do not remember, here is a video for you!

If you want to see how different the Bastille Day celebrations were this year, here is a video from Paris this morning, showing the parades and ceremonies that took place -with far fewer people and crowds.

Why not use the following video to make a cockade (cocarde in French), which is a special badge rosette that became a symbol of the revolution and Bastille Day......

Year 2 - Acer and Cedar visit the Maritime Museum

We had a fun day exploring the Maritime Museum today, making links to our Around the World topic! We became explorers and used clues to work out where two explorers came from in the world. Then we visited the Polar Worlds exhibition and listened to a real explorer! Finally we enjoyed playing in ‘Ahoy’ the interactive learning area!

Thank you to the parents who helped us on this trip!

Year 2 - Around the World (Acer Class)

We have enjoyed dressing in our cultural clothes today and sharing facts about where we are from. Everyone looks fantastic in the cultural colours!

We have children from all around the world in our school, so this term’s topic has been really popular. We have dived straight into our learning!

As an end of term treat, we tasted some foods from different countries too! This included chin chin from Africa, popadoms and mango chutney from India and Belgium waffles! Take a look at the photos below to see our taste reactions!

Have a lovely half term holiday and we look forward to seeing you back next term to begin our studies on Oceans!

Year 2 Acer - Laptop Learning!

In our Computing this week, we learnt how to use the search engine Kiddle to find flags from around the world. Kiddle is a search engine for kids - much like the well-known Google!

We had to remember our e-safety rules when searching online.

Try using www.kiddle.com at home to search for fun facts!

Then, we used 2 Publish to type text and draw pictures. We learnt how to use the pencil and fill tool, selecting different colours for our pictures. Afterwards, we used the keyboard to type a sentence about the place we had drawn! What a great afternoon of fun learning!

Sid the African snail visits Year 2!

This week Year 2 have been learning about the second largest continent in our world - Africa!

We have explored African countries using a factual board game, weaved Kente cloth and even had a visit from Sid the African land snail!

Mrs Travis brought Sid in to show us and answered our questions about Sid’s habitat and the foods he eats. Some of the children were even brave enough to hold Sid! He’s a bit slippery and slimy but we loved him!

Even Miss Haigh enjoyed having a hold of Sid!

G’Day Mate!

This week, in Year 2, we have been learning about Australia! We have combined our English, Geography and Art learning to develop our knowledge of this continent, which is also a country!

Did you know, most of Australia is a hot, dry, arid desert?

Take a look at our Aboriginal Art work below. We used earth colours and cotton buds to paint dots in the aboriginal style. Can you guess what animals we have painted?
