UN Spanish Language Day 2023 - extra ideas for you!

This week Year 3 and Year have been honouring UN Spanish Language Day which falls on 23rd April each year.

Here are some additional ideas for fun, simple activities you could do to celebrate the day and improve your Spanish:

- Sing along to a Spanish or Latino pop song

- Watch a TV programme or film which is set in Spanish

- Put your favourite film or TV programme's subtitles into Spanish and look out for cognates

- Eat some yummy Mexican food (and practise pronouncing items properly)

- Use Linguascope or Duolingo apps to learn some new vocabulary

- Read the famous Spanish novel Don Quijote (you can find English translated copies!)

- Check out La Liga football fixtures and see which team is at the top spot at the moment

Year 4 Pine Class love Linguascope

This week Year 4 Pine Class had opportunities to use the iPads and use the app, Linguascope, to start learning new vocabulary on the topic on Transport which links to their Town topic.

Remember you can use Linguascope at home to teach yourself French or Spanish (or a number of other languages!) and the website and downloadable app are available for all pupils to use.

Ask your teacher for the most up-to-date login details if you need them!

We love Linguascope!

Last week, as a link to our topic about daily life, in Year 6 we spent our French lesson on the ipads using Linguascope. We focused on learning how to recognise times in French and looked for links to our Maths to help us understand how they structure their telling the time phrases in French. We enjoyed playing the games as always!

Remember all children have accessed to Linguascope as part of their online learning and homework - as your class teacher for thr most up-to-date login information!

Here are Year 6 Elder Class enjoying their session.

Home activities for learning, mental health and wellbeing.

Learning happens in so many different ways for children.

Other than the printed learning packs and/ or online learning your children are doing, there are also other ways they can practise their skills and develop. These will also help their wellbeing and mental health.

Some activities to try-

  • Den building
  • Shoe box houses
  • Baking BBC- Top 10 easy bakes for kids
  • Build a bird house
  • Grow something Picklebums- Veggies to grow with kids
  • Make a time capsule
  • Sock ball challenges-  How many keepy uppies?  Basketball contests (using a bin or laundry basket). Bouncing them off walls. Make up your own game.

  • Collect at home maths aids, for your lessons- Smarties, Lego bricks, pasta shapes, pennies, buttons or paperclips
  • Scavenger hunts out and about or at home. Can include looking for letters in the alphabet/ colours in rainbow/ leaves all sorts of things really.
  • Play some card games. They can practise a variety of skills, such as: patience, strategy, focus, recognising patterns with numbers and their reflexes. KIDSPOT 12-classic-card-games-to-teach-the-kids

BBC education support

Starting on Monday 11 January, each week day on CBBC will see a three-hour block of primary school programming from 9am, including BBC Live Lessons and BBC Bitesize Daily, as well as other educational programming such as Our School and Celebrity Supply Teacher and much loved titles such as Horrible Histories, Art Ninja and Operation Ouch.

If you can't watch when the programmes are initially shown (because you are in your Google classroom with your teacher and classmates), you can still access them on BBC Red Button, as well as episodes being available on demand on BBC iPlayer.

Also, BBC Bitesize online has an expanded offer of structured lessons in Maths and English for all year groups. ‘This Term’s Topics’ also covers other curriculum subjects and curates learning content that works for the Spring curriculum.

Visit bbc.co.uk/bitesize, click on the year group and subject and all the content is there. If your child is working below that of their year group (possibly with a Special Educational Need), this gives you the flexibility to use resources and learning (especially for Maths and English skills) suitable to their learning level.

Bienvenue à Bannockburn - the Junior Language Challenge will be returning this year again!

 Bonjour tout le monde!

Madame Seaton here,

I hope you all had a safe but enjoyable Summer and are excited to be back at school! Some things might be a little different to last year but many aspects of school are staying the same - you  will have weekly French lessons, although sometimes with me in person, other times with me virtually and even some French lessons will be taught by your class teachers!

Very soon I will be organising the first stage of this year's Junior Language Challenge; last year we had 4 children progress to the final stages which was amazing - how may can we get this year?

I am not sure what the first language will be, but in the meant time, check out this web page which gives information about the JLC and how it all works, so that as soon as registration is open for our school, I can register you if you want to take part (please note, you don't need to register yourselves - I will do all this through our school account!) and then you can get started and get learning!

Vive La France!!!! - Today is Bastille Day!

Bonjour tout le monde!

We celebrated our annual French Day back in February, but today in France (July 14th) is Bastille Day - a national holiday and very important celebration of French history and society.

You might remember learning about Bastille Day and the French Revolution on July 14th last year, but in case you do not remember, here is a video for you!

If you want to see how different the Bastille Day celebrations were this year, here is a video from Paris this morning, showing the parades and ceremonies that took place -with far fewer people and crowds.

Why not use the following video to make a cockade (cocarde in French), which is a special badge rosette that became a symbol of the revolution and Bastille Day......

Le Petit Prince - the most famous French children's story

Bonjour tout le monde!

Hopefully, you have found time during lockdown to read some 'livres' - whether hard copies from your bookshelf or digital downloads on an electronic device.

One of the most famous classic French children's stories is Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exubéry.

Here are  number of different ways you can explore this amazing story this Summer:

A FREE audio copy in English is available on Youtube here

Or you can watch the trailer for the French film from 2015 here

A link to buy a copy of the full story in English (paperback, download, audiobook all available)

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Petit-Prince-Antoine-Saint-Exupery/dp/1607964155

Or you might like to buy this brilliant bilingual copy that has French and English translations

Le Petit Prince (Bilingual book for children)

Perhaps you could do a piece of artwork inspired by the story, or use a dictionary to make a list of French words linked to the story to help someone else understand it better? Or you could take a photo of you enjoying reading it - I would love to see how many of you are able to enjoy this wonderful story over the Summer!
