Year 3: Active Maths

Year 3 took part in an active Maths session this week. We are currently learning about statistics and data handling in Maths. In order to generate our own data, we had to take part in a range of exercises for a minute, such as star jumps, shuttle runs, burpees, squats and hopping. We had to complete each exercise for a minute and our partners counted how many reps we managed in a minute. We then recorded this information on our record sheets. We will use this data to create a table and a bar chart as the week goes on and create questions based on this information.

Sports activity

How many repetitions completed

Jumping jacks

Hopping

Running

Squats

Burpees

All activities to be completed in 1 minute – how many can you do in that minute?

Set your stop watch so you do not go over!

Good luck! J

Year 3: Maths - Measure

In Year 3, we have been learning about length and measurement. We have looked at centimetres and metres and learned that 100cm = 1m. We decided to measure ourselves using metre sticks. We then recorded our heights in centimetres and metres. We converted between the two unit of measurements.

Year 3: Maths - Right Angles around a point

In today's lesson, we looked at quadrilaterals and their right angles. We cut out different quadrilaterals and put them around a point. We discovered that we can only fit 4 right angles around a point. A right angle has 90° and so we deduced that there is 360° around a point.

Year 3: Maths - Rectangles

Today, we looked at squares and rectangles and learnt that all squares are rectangles. We then identified shapes that were squares by checking that their sides were all the same length and their vertices were all right angles. We then drew our own squares, checking they had the correct properties.

Year 3 Maths - Volume

This week in Maths, Year 3 have been learning about volume and capacity. We discovered that volume is the amount of liquid that a container holds, whereas capacity is the total amount of liquid that a container can hold. We learned about millilitres and litres and used them to measure volume and capacity of different containers.

Year 3 Maths - What is mass?

We have been learning about mass this week in Year 3. We discovered that mass is the amount something weighs. We use grams and kilograms to measure mass and in our lesson, we weighed different objects recording their weights in grams. We then ordered the weights from lightest to heaviest.

Mathletics in Year 6 - Maths

Today, Elm Class spent some time using Mathletics.

Each child used their unique log in to access the learning set by their teacher.

The learning on Mathletics links directly to the learning children are doing in school so it's a great way for children to revisit previously taught concepts. The children can practise key skills and then take a test to earn points and awards.

If you haven't used Mathletics yet, log in and see what you can do!

If you need your Mathletics log in, please speak to your teacher.

BODMAS in Year 6 - Maths

This week, Year 6 have been putting their calculation skills to the test by learning what BODMAS means and how it can help them to solve tricky calculations.

BODMAS is one of the most important tools children learn in mathematics, setting the foundation for tackling complex problems with ease. The acronym stands for Brackets, Orders (powers and roots), Division, Multiplication, Addition, and Subtraction. By following this order, children can break down and solve equations step by step.

After learning the rules of BODMAS, children then had to work collaboratively with a partner to 'crack the code' by solving a range of BODMAS questions.

Year 4 - Maths

To support their learning on place value of numbers up to 10,000 and addition/subtraction, Year 4 have been using place value counters.

Year 2 - Problem solving

Year 2 have been working in pairs to solve problems involving their learning on doubling and halving. They had to draw diagrams to show the maths behind the problem and there are were also some red herrings thrown in which involved addition instead of doubling. They did brilliantly!

Multiplying and Dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000 in Year 4

In Maths this year, Year 4 have been focusing on how we can quickly recall multiplication and division facts. We have spent time recapping and learning new times tables, but we have also been looking at speedy strategies to multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1,000. We explored how the place value of digits are affected  when this happens and have practiced by moving numbers along a place value chart. After, we played an active maths game where each player represented either multiplying or dividing by 10, 100 or 1,00 and had to quickly give their final answer in the time it takes to catch a bean bag!

Using Division Facts in Year 4

In Maths this half term, Year 4 have been recalling and learning new multiplication and division facts connected to their times tables knowledge. We have spent time identifying factors and products of the 7, 9 and 11 times tables this half term and have practiced them in many contexts. We have also been looking at related division facts and using our knowledge of the distributive law and partitioning to find simple strategies to divide. After developing problem solving strategies, we moved from table to table looking at multiplication facts and writing as many connected division facts as we could in 3 minutes.

Perimeter in Year 4

In Maths this week, Year 4 have been learning about shapes and their perimeters. We have spent time identifying that the perimeter is the lengths of all the sides of a shape added together and exploring how to measure perimeter.  We have also been comparing shapes that have the same perimeter but a different number of sides. After, we used a set amount of lollipop sticks to create numerous different shapes that all had the same perimeter.

Year 4- finding 1,000 more or less

This week, we having been learning how to find more less than a given number.

Today, we were using counters and manipulatives to help us find 1,000 more or less than a given number.

Year 4 - Active Maths

This week we took part in an active Maths lesson, where we learned about the different types of angles. We went out into the playground and practised our quarter, half and full turns. We then used the compass points of North, South, East and West to add an extra challenge.
