Year 4 - Victorians Immersion

 

As part of their history learning, Year 4 took part in an exciting Victorian Immersion Day to experience what life was like during the Victorian era. Throughout the day, the children explored a range of activities including learning about Victorian classrooms and schools, investigating Victorian features around our own school site — which was built in 1903 — and discovering how people travelled during Victorian times. The pupils also enjoyed playing traditional playground games such as marbles and hopscotch, helping to bring history to life in a fun and memorable way.

Poplar Mini Chef - Year 4 - Roman Feast

 As part of our topic learning inspired by Diary of Iliona, Poplar Tree explored Roman food and daily life by preparing a traditional lentil and barley stew alongside Roman-style flatbreads. Using knowledge gained from our reading, the children made connections to how food was grown, prepared and enjoyed in Roman times. They also learned about the importance of food safety and hygiene while cooking. After preparing and tasting their dishes, the class proudly shared their creations with the school community by selling them at the end of the day—bringing history to life through a hands-on, delicious experience!

Year 4- Pot making

In Art, we learnt techniques to manipulate clay and make our own pots.

Year 4 - Maths - Fractions

 As part of our Year 4 maths learning on finding fractions of amounts, the children took part in a practical lesson in Forest School. Using natural resources such as leaves, logs, sticks and trees, the children worked together to find and represent different fractions of given amounts. This helped to consolidate our understanding of fractions by applying mathematical skills in a real-life, outdoor context and supported problem solving skills with our classmates. 

Year 4 Maths!

During our Maths learning this week, Year 4 looked at negative numbers. We looked at how temperature can go below zero and how this is represented using negative numbers. 

We then explored the concept using real-life examples, discussing how temperatures change between positive and negative values (e.g. 5°C to -3°C). 

Children practised reading temperatures, identifying the difference between temperatures, and using number lines to understand how numbers decrease below zero.

Year 4 - Starting to learn the Ukulele!

Year 4 have had their first lessons on the Ukulele in music with Mrs Manser. So far we have learnt the names of the strings using the mnemonic Good Children Eat Apples and we have started playing a song called "My dog has fleas!". Next we are going to focus on using the correct fingers to play chords.
