Year 6 - Outdoor PE - Jumping
This term, Year 6 have been trialling different skills within athletic sports in their Outdoor PE lessons. A skill that the children were keen to adopt this term was jumping, through the sports of long jump and triple jump.
To provide the children with an optimum strategy for the long jump, Year 6 first practised jumping for height from a stationary position. They were instructed to bend their knees before rising and to bend upon landing, to ensure they were protecting their joints from damage. After a few practice rounds, the children were confident to move on to jumping for distance, ensuring that they used their arms to propel themselves further.
The entire experience was enjoyable, as the children were given the opportunity to beat their personal best in the long jump, but also apply their mathematical skills to measure the distance that was achieved.
Once secure with the long jump, the children were ready to move onto the next lesson in the athletics sequence: triple jump. Before practising, the children learned about the different phases of triple jump (hop, step, jump). Some preferred the simplicity of long jump; the long jump only has one phase (just jump!) while others liked the complexity of the triple jump.
Once again, the metre sticks were out to measure distance and some incredible jumping was achieved by the children of Year 6. Well done to you all!

Weighing it up in Reception
In Reception we have been thinking about different types of measurement. At the moment we are focusing on weight and how we can measure it in different ways. We started by using balancing scales to see how many unifix cubes we needed to work out the weight of our classroom objects before using electronic scales to measure more accurately.

Measurement with Year 1.
This week, Year 1 have been learning about length and height as well as using language such as tall, short and long. We have discussed both non-standard and standard units of measurement. At the beginning of the week we used cubes to measure the length and height of different objects and compared them. We then moved on to use standard units of measurement by using a ruler. We measured the length and height of different objects using the language of centimetres.

Measurement with Year 1
This week, we have been learning about measurement with a focus on length, weight, height and volume. We have been using non-standard units of measurement to measure the length and height of objects as well as a ruler to measure in centimetres. We heave been using balancing scales to identify heavy and light objects as well as digital scales to measure weight in grams. We have been discussing language such as full, empty and half full to measure volume and have used the language of millilitres to compare volume.
