Arts Weeks in Year 1

All of Year 1 have loved getting creative this week and have made kites, parachutes and hot air balloons. Lime Class have been enjoying their theme of cheerleading and have been practising some cheerleading moves and creating a sequence of movements together.

They have been showcasing their gymnastics skills and have worked together to represent different letters of the alphabet with their bodies.

They have also made their own pom-poms, came up with a class mascot as well as their own and have enhanced their artistic skills by collaging, sketching, shading and painting.

Year 1 are looking forward to more creative activities after half term.

Titanic Narratives in Year 5

This term in Year 5, we have been writing narratives based around our Titanic topic. During our themed day, the children watched footage of the Titanic and generated some descriptive vocabulary that they then used in poems to describe the ship's sinking following a given pattern.

After that, we read the opening, build up and dilemma of the story of two children on board the Titanic. We looked at the features used in the narrative and identified the effect they had on the reader. We then completed some drama activities acting out possible endings to the story and dialogue between the main characters which focused on the difference between formal and informal speech.

We completed two short burst writing activities where we included a range of adverbial openers in order to make our writing more varied and focused on using the correct punctuation for speech.

Over the course of a week, we planned the events and resolution section of our stories, which focused on balancing action, description and dialogue, and wrote out our endings to the given text. The children produced some marvellous pieces of writing containing: figurative language for description; a range of openers; relative clauses; speech, non verbal clues and plenty of action.
