Year 4- English biographies

Year 4 have been learning how to write biographies by exploring the lives of two powerful women from history: Boudicca, the fierce Celtic warrior queen, and Queen Victoria, one of Britain’s longest-reigning monarchs.

In our Roman topic, we learnt all about Boudicca, her battle against the Romans, and her role in British history. The children loved discovering what made her such a memorable leader and how her bravery is still remembered today. From there, we moved on to Queen Victoria, looking at her early life, her reign, and the many changes Britain went through during the Victorian era.

To help us with our writing, we created a Biography Toolkit together

It was a brilliant opportunity for the children to practice writing and critical thinking—all while learning about two very different but equally interesting people from history. We’re so proud of their thoughtful, well-structured biographies!

Year 3's poetry performance

This week, Year 3 have continued to explore poetry. With a partner, the children chose a poem to rehearse for a poetry reading in Guided Reading. We learnt about how we can use intonation and volume to engage listeners and the different effects this can have. We then performed our poems to one another and reflected on our performances.

Able Writers Workshop (Year 6)

As part of our drive to raise standards in writing, four Year 6 children were lucky enough to take part in an Able Writers workshop at Rockliffe Manor Primary School on Monday. The day was led by Phil Wilcox, a poet who has competed in poetry slam competitions around the world.

During the day, the children learnt techniques to help expand their imagination, practised using a range of hand gestures while performing and learnt about the power of 'sprinkling' rhyme throughout a poem (rather than just using rhyming couplets at the end of lines).

They wrote a few different poems - including a giant group poem and an individual poem with a repeated chorus, which they performed in a mini 'poetry slam'.

Making a rainbow in Year 3

This week, we have begun learning about recipes in English. Our new text is 'How to cook a rainbow', so we have been talking about chronology and the different sections within instructional texts. Today, we worked as a group to re-order some instructions for making a 3D rainbow. We then followed these instructions to make these lovely 3D rainbows using cotton wool and coloured card.
