This week, Year 3 have continued to explore poetry. With a partner, the children chose a poem to rehearse for a poetry reading in Guided Reading. We learnt about how we can use intonation and volume to engage listeners and the different effects this can have. We then performed our poems to one another and reflected on our performances.
This week in PD we were learning about types of conflicts. We discussed several scenarios and shared whether we thought bullying was taking place and what the issues were.
We discussed how it might feel to be a bystander and what to do if you are in that position. We learnt about the 'solve it' steps and how we can use them ourselves.
Year 3 have begun to make their prototypes for their Greek sandals in their DT lessons. Firstly, the children learnt what a prototype is and why we needed to make one. Then, we went on to look at the designs we had sketched and have a go at creating these out of paper. To begin, we made the sandal structure and later we will go on to add a weaving element to our sandals.
This half term, Year 3 are learning all about different types of rocks and soils. We started this topic off by creating a class mind map of everything we already know. We then worked in groups as 'geologists' to compare and group a variety of rocks in different ways.
This week, we have begun learning about recipes in English. Our new text is 'How to cook a rainbow', so we have been talking about chronology and the different sections within instructional texts. Today, we worked as a group to re-order some instructions for making a 3D rainbow. We then followed these instructions to make these lovely 3D rainbows using cotton wool and coloured card.
This week Year 3 Chestnut took part in Mini-Chef and had a fantastic day in the community kitchen! We prepared vegetarian pitta pizzas with a side of potato wedges. Everyone had a chance to practise chopping vegetables and grating cheese, before assembling a healthy pizza each. We also designed our own colourful food labels and posters to appeal people buying our food at the end of the day.
In Chestnut Class. our focus for Arts Weeks was the subject of Religious Education. Our learning was themed around Islamic Art and mosques. Firstly, we created our own symmetrical tiles on squared paper, using mirrors to help us ensure they were the same on both sides. We then used these designs to help us create a tile from modelling clay, which we painted in bright colours.
Throughout the week we looked at famous mosques around the world and carried out research about their architecture and interiors. Then, using this information, we wrote fact files that we decorated with our own drawings of mosques.
We created different artwork themed around mosques using a range of media, including using straws to make a 3D collage, using cellophane to create a stain glass effect and using water colours to paint a colourful sky behind a silhouette.

In our PE lessons, we continued to explore the themes of symmetry and repeated patterns. We discussed different ways to create symmetry using our body, ensuring our arms and legs looked the same. We made individual symmetrical shapes, then worked with a partner to mirror each other. After this, we formed small groups to make shapes on the floor which resembled patterns we had seen in Islamic artwork.
After looking at a range of Islamic artwork seen inside mosques, we linked our learning to well-known artwork that contains geometric shapes and repetition. In particular, we discussed some colourful pieces of art by Bridget Riley, who often uses symmetry and tessellations in her work.
