Year 4 States of Matter

This term in Science, we have been learning all about the states of matter and how water can change between being a liquid, a gas, and back again. To help us understand this, we carried out an exciting experiment in the science lab!

We filled a plastic cup with hot tap water and added a few drops of food colouring. Then, we carefully placed an empty cup upside down over the top. As we watched, something amazing started to happen… condensation began to form on the inside of the top cup! Tiny coloured droplets appeared and collected together.

We drew careful diagrams of what we saw to record the changes.

Some of us thought the droplets looked like raindrops forming in a cloud. We discovered that this is very similar to how clouds are made in the sky! When water is heated, it turns into water vapour (a gas). As it cools down, it changes back into liquid water, forming droplets – just like the ones we saw in our experiment.

This simple investigation helped us see the water cycle in action, right in our own science lab!
