Year 4 Explore the States of Matter!

Year 4 Explore the States of Matter!

This week, our Year 4 children have been exploring the fascinating world of states of matter!

Our learning question was:

“Do I know the difference between solids, liquids and gases?”

We began by identifying everyday materials and sorting them into three groups: solids, liquids and gases. The children then discussed the different properties that help us recognise each state of matter.

We discovered that solids keep their own shape, while liquids can flow and take the shape of their container. Gases spread out and fill the space available to them.

Learning Through Movement

To bring our learning to life, the children became particles of matter!

Working in groups, they created their own dance sequences to demonstrate how particles behave in solids, liquids and gases.

For a solid, the children showed particles packed closely together, with only small movements.

For a liquid, they demonstrated particles staying close but moving and sliding past one another.

For a gas, the children spread out around the space, moving freely to show how gas particles are further apart and move in different directions.

Well done, Year 4! Science really can get you moving!
