Year 6: The Science Museum Reward Trip

Year 6 Reward Trip to The Science Museum

On Monday 14th November, some Year 6 pupils and a handful of very lucky Year 5 pupils went to a brand new gallery at the Science Museum.

Wonderlab is an interactive gallery where we could explore, play and learn independently and lead our own learning. There were amazing resources and interesting ideas- even including an experiment using three slides!

"There were things I have never seen before- it's been an amazing day!"

"I've learnt so much and had a really fun day too; I really liked the chemistry experiments with dry ice!"

"I would definitely recommend this gallery to others- it is the best museum I have ever been to!"

KS2 - Google Expeditions Workshops

Google Expeditions visited us in Key Stage 2 today! We explored the Egyptian Pyramids, trekked through the Amazon, dived underwater to investigate shipwrecks and hiked the trails of the Mayan Ruins! We used virtual reality to explore all these places without leaving our school!

Children's quotes:
"This is so cool! It's like we're actually there"- Year 3
"It makes the learning fun and we haven't even left the room!" - Year 6
"I had so much fun! When can we do it again?"- Year 4
"Look! I can see a Turtle! It's above me!"- Year 5
And finally a quote from our visitor from Google,
"I really enjoyed visiting the school. The enthusiasm was great and the children were so engaged!"- Fiona, Google Expedition Team.

Year 6 - Welling Football Club

This year, Bannockburn has forged alliances with Welling Football Club to provide some unique learning activities in Year 6. The school has selected a group of 12 pupils to engage in a variety of physical education activities, such as football, rugby, running, hurdling etc.

One of the aims of these activities is to develop greater collaboration and teamwork skills amongst our Year 6 pupils, in order to give them the necessary skills for the transition to secondary school.

Using the school mini-bus, every Friday afternoon we transport the children to the Welling Football Club training ground at Swingate Lane.

Today, the children engaged in a variety of team games, running using a parachute and also managed to find the time to make some fruit kebabs!

Year 5 - Deadman's Penny Competition

The Memorial Plaque was issued after the First World War to the next-of-kin of all British and Empire service personnel who were killed as a result of the war.

The plaques (which could be described as large plaquettes) were made of bronze, and hence popularly known as the "Dead Man’s Penny", because of the similarity in appearance to the somewhat smaller penny coin.

1,355,000 plaques were issued, which used a total of 450 tonnes of bronze, and continued to be issued into the 1930s to commemorate people who died as a consequence of the war.

Last year some of our Year 5 children entered a competition to design some 'Dead Man's Pennies' to be displayed in the new Woolwich Arsenal Crossrail station. Twelve of the children's designed have been chosen, which is a fantastic achievement.

Their designs have been created by a local artist and can be viewed once the station opens in 2018.

Nursery Acorn Class - Where is Little Bear?

Acorn class has started to learn their new class topic book, ‘Can’t You Sleep Little Bear’ by Martin Waddell. Little Bear visited us in class and has been hiding in the indoor and outdoor areas.

In Forest School we went on a bear hunt to find Little Bear. We described where we found little bear using positional language such as under, on top, next, in front, behind and in between.
