Today we were lucky to be visited by practitioners from Tate Britain to lead Year 3 through several workshops and activities exploring the theme of community.
The workshop
The workshop focused on exploring and sharing ideas around identity that go beyond what can be seen in a photograph. It framed the project for the Year 3 children as a journey, starting with having their photo taken in school in the Autumn Term, followed by this workshop and then visiting the Tate exhibition when they are in Year 4.As part of the workshop, the children created artwork and ideas for a “vault” which will capture and share things about them that a photograph can not. In the final session of the day, we invited parents and carers in the school to see what the Year 3 children had created during the day.
As part of that final session, the children placed things from the morning sessions into the “vault” along with some “surprises” from the practitioners. This “vault” can then be opened again in Year 4, prior to their visit to Tate Britain. We hope that whatever's in there will be used to help the children reflect, ask questions and think more deeply about the exhibition and their role in it.
Thank you to the parents and carers who came to see all the work the children created. It was great to have so much support!
