Mini Scientists in 'Hawchard' (Orchard and Hawthorn) Aim to Recover Materials!

Orchard and Hawthorn join together again for Part 2 of our Science investigation.
Last week, we focused on mixing materials and creating solutions; although this week we investigated how we could recover these materials using evaporation, filtration and sieving.

We were given a sieve, filter paper, a colander and a saucepan! We had to work together to investigate which of these were suitable to separate:

- coffee & water
- sugar & water
- salt & water
- rice & water
- sand & water

After we had tested evaporation, filtration and sieving, we concluded which were the most suitable and fastest to separate soluble and insoluble materials.

It was great fun testing these different separation methods and enabled us to identify whether these were reversible or irreversible changes.

Can you predict which separation method worked best for our materials?

ORDER IN THE COURTROOM! Orchard Class's Crime and Punishment Trial...

In Humanities this week, Year 5 Orchard Class used their drama skills to create a courtroom in the classroom.

We used our knowledge and understanding of the Anglo-Saxon and Viking judicial systems to decide suitable punishments for different crimes, and also compared ideas with a modern day prosecution team, to explore how the judicial system has changed; a jury then unanimously decided which punishments were more appropriate.

Our modern day prosecutors discussing the appropriate punishment for our suspect.

 The all important Jury.

The Jury reveal their verdict.

Year 5 - Musical fun with Orchard and Hawthorn Class!

Year 5 - Mini Scientists in Orchard and Hawthorn Class...

This week in Science, Orchard and Hawthorn (Hawchard) joined together for a collaborative investigation!

As our topic this half term is materials, we investigated the reactions of different materials; these included plaster of paris, sand, salt, sugar, baking soda and powder paint.

We mixed these individually with water and observed what happened. It was great fun to see the substances that were created and we used our scientific vocabulary to record what we observed - 'dissolve'  'translucent' 'transparent' 'opaque'.
