Year 3 - Magnets and Forces Immersion Day

Today, Year 3 took part in a fantastic Immersion Day where they explored different forces and magnets. They took part in four different activities where they explored a range of forces as well as using magnets. In one activity, the children created rocket mice where they compressed the air in bottles to launch their rocket mice into space. The children also explored air resistance in another activity where they used parachutes, learning how much harder it is to run with a parachute than without one! Magnetic Mazes was the next activity where children created their own mazes and guided a paperclip through the maze using a magnet underneath. Lastly the children created their own gliders, they created their own wings for their gliders and then compared which one was the most successful. 

Magnets and Forces - Year 3

Today, we began our new topic in Science, Forces and Magnets. We began by discussing everything we already know about magnets and forces and the questions we have about this topic. We then recorded this into our books. We then began to explore forces and magnets by using them on our tables. We learnt that magnetic forces can act at a distance and attract some materials and not others. We compared and grouped materials according to whether they were magnetic or not. We also discussed that often metals are magnetic, but learnt that not all metals such as copper and aluminium are magnetic.
