WE Foundation Assembly and Workshops

This week Bannockburn was visited by Ivy, who is part of WE. WE is a charity that helps children and young people to make positive changes and take social action.

She led an assembly at High Street where she reminded us that big changes can be made by taking small steps, and showing values like perseverance, resilience and determination.

Then she met the Rights Respecting Team at Manor Way, who (with her help) planned some social action to get people thinking and and get talking about child obesity, and how we can tackle the problem as a community.

Next, the Helping Others Team started planning some Comic Relief activities. She inspired them with some fresh new fundraising ideas and got them to brainstorm ideas on different things we could do.

The children really enjoyed working with her and are looking forward to undertaking the social action projects soon.

Woolwich Winter Warmer

Last weekend over 120 pupils, family and friends came together to represent the Bannockburn community at the Woolwich Winter Warmer Lantern Parade.

After meeting at the Woolwich Centre to collect our lanterns, which were made prior to the event in a special workshop run by Emergency Exit Arts, the parade set off; we walked throught the streets of Woolwich through to the Royal Arsenal, enjoying the festive atmosphere, samba drum rhythms and beautiful lantern artworks that were carried through the town.

The event ended with a spectacular fireworks display
that lit up the Royal Arsenal.

Thanks to everyone who attended; the house points earnt will be added to the current totals very soon.

These children will have the opportunity to show off their work during a parade that walks around Woolwich Town centre.

This event is open to the public and we would love to see you join in the parade with us, enjoy the festivities and support our school.

On Saturday 7th December  at 12 noon – 7.00 pm
At General Gordon Square, Woolwich, London, SE18 6HD.

Further details for exact time and meeting place for the parade will be announced in due course.

Here is a sneak peek at the lantern-making workshop that took place this week with artists from Emergency Exit Arts.

Tate Britain visits Year 3 once again!

Today we were lucky to be visited by practitioners from Tate Britain to lead Year 3 through several workshops and activities  exploring the theme of community.

The workshop

The workshop focused on exploring and sharing ideas around identity that go beyond what can be seen in a photograph. It framed the project for the Year 3 children as a journey, starting with having their photo taken in school in the Autumn Term, followed by this workshop and then visiting the Tate exhibition when they are in Year 4.

As part of the workshop, the children created artwork and ideas for a “vault” which will  capture and share things about them that a photograph can not. In the final session of the day, we invited parents and carers in the school to see what the Year 3 children had created during the day.

As part of that final session, the children placed things from the morning sessions into the “vault” along with some “surprises” from the practitioners. This “vault” can then be opened again in Year 4, prior to their visit to Tate Britain.  We hope that whatever's in there will be used to help the children reflect, ask questions and think more deeply about the exhibition and their role in it.

Thank you to the parents and carers who came to see all the work the children created. It was great to have so much support!

WE Org Visitor - working with Funding Raising Group

This morning we had Tracy Lomanga, who is a Speaker and Facilitator from the WE Schools Organisation. Members of our Fundraising Community Partnership Group spent part of this morning with Tracy discussing ideas for the next fundraising event here at school. After brainstorming various ideas the children needed to close their eyes, listen to the suggestions and vote for the idea which they felt was the most worthy.

WE Schools is a unique, four-step program—delivered in more than 14,500 schools across the UK and North America—that challenges young people to identify the local and global issues that spark their passion and then empowers them with the tools to take action.
The WE Schools program provides teachers and students with curriculum-matched lesson plans, educational resources and a full calendar of action campaign ideas. Through WE Schools, students gain an understanding of the root causes of pressing issues like hunger, poverty and poor access to education, and explore what they can do to help. They also plan at least one local and one global action to improve their community and the world.
