Docklands at War- WWII Year 5

As part of our World War 2 topic, Year 5 visited the London Docklands Museum to see the Docklands at War exhibition. In doing this, the children were able to develop their learning through a hands-on approach.

Seeing the artefacts was a fun experience for them. Exploring the Anderson and bomb shelters gave them a sense of how horrific life was during the Blitz. They were fascinated to learn about the destruction and damage caused to London's docks in World War 2. They also learned that the docks were the first target of the London Blitz.

Plumstead Fire Station Visit Reception!

Reception were visited by Plumstead Fire Station. We learnt about how firefighters help our community and were talked through the equipment that they use in their job. The fire fighters even let us have a try of their walkie talkies! We visited the fire engine and were able to sit on the back seats.

WWII in Year 5

This term in year 5, we have been Learning about the Second World War in Europe and why the Battle of Britain was such a significant turning point in British History.

As an introduction to this topic. During our first lesson, we explored World War II artefacts in an interactive pop-up museum. The children particularly enjoyed trying on gas masks. With this, we were able to use inference skills to determine what time period it was, explain our reasoning based on the sources, and apply our historical knowledge to the situation.

Throughout this term, we have enjoyed examining the timeline of key events such as the outbreak of the war, the Battle of Britain, the heroic rescue at Dunkirk, the Blitz, the D-Day landings and the celebrations of VE Day. Research the lives of the ordinary people on the Home Front who faced the Blitz and coped with rationing and evacuation.

Year 3 had a blast on their trip to the British Museum! There was so much to see! Many of them took the Elizabeth line for the first time!

As part of their learning in History, they had to find primary and secondary sources to support their predictions on a variety of statements. Check out our blog from last week to see them!

Exploring the ancient Greeks- Year 3

In preparation for their trip to the British Museum this week, Year 3 have been using their prediction skills, primary and secondary sources and prior knowledge to discuss whether they agree or disagree with the following statements:

The Greeks didn't care about luxury.
The Greeks were imaginative and creative.
Gods and Goddesses were important in Greek civilization.
Shipbuilding was important in Ancient Greece.

We can't wait to use the primary and secondary sources at the museum to help us support our predictions!
