Year 6 - Science - Living things investigation

This week, our Year 6 pupils have been investigating living things as part of their Science learning. Using bottles, balloons, water and sugar, they conducted an experiment to determine whether yeast is a living thing. It was amazing to watch the balloons inflate as the yeast reacted with the sugar proving that the yeast was alive!

Germs Attack in Year 2! - Science Investigation

Year 2 have started off the new term by taking part in a Science investigation! This term we are learning about human health and hygiene and why it is important to wash our hands.

Watch this space for updates on our germ experiment! You may even like to try this at home!

Year 4 Science

In Science, Year 4 have been investigating 'States of Matter'. We found out what properties a solid, liquid and gas have and talked about examples of these in real life.

This week, we took a closer look at some everyday products, such as marshmallows, shaving foam and cornflour, and used our knowledge to decide if they were a solid, liquid or gas and explained our reasons why.

Later in the lesson, we discovered what happened to cornflour once we added water and thought about other examples when matter might change state.

Aadam in Pine Class was especially keen to demonstrate his understanding as he brought in a cup of ice the following day. He explained that the water in the cup was now a solid after he placed it in the freezer but last night it was a liquid!

Year 2 investigate... GERMS!

This week, Year 2 have begun to investigate germs as part of our healthy living science topic. We want to understand how germs and bacteria are spread and whether washing your hands with soap and water really works to reduce the spread!

Method.

1. We placed our unwashed hands over one piece of bread and the sealed it in a zip lock bag.

2. We then thoroughly washed our hands with soap and water before touching the next piece bread and again placing it in a sealed zip lock bag.

3. Our third piece of bread is our 'control' bread. This piece was handled with a glove on and did not touch our hands at all, again placing it in a sealed zip lock bag.

We will monitor the bread for changes and see if we can answer our questions next week!

Year 2 - Super Scientists in Sycamore Class

This first half term in Science we have been learning about the human body. We wanted to investigate what sugar can do to our teeth  To do this we used eggs, as the shells are similar to the enamel on teeth. We put them in different drinks (Coke, orange juice, milk and water) and left them for a week. Before carrying out the investigation we predicted what each drink would do to the eggs, and after we looked at the results we wrote a conclusion to explain what we had found out.  Here are some pictures of the work we did.

Year One Home Learning

Below is some work that a child from Damson Tree has been doing this week.

Thank you for sharing your photos, you've done a great job!

Year 5 Science Investigation

Year 5 are currently investigating how to help the world's fastest female marathon runner, Brigid Kosgei, beat her current record. We are looking at which surface creates the most friction with a running trainer. So far, we have planned our investigation and have carried out the fair tests using a force meter. Next, we will be deciding how to present our results and letting Brigid know our findings.

Bubbles Galore!

This week, Year 5 enjoyed answering the investigation 'Which type of washing up liquid makes the best bubbles?'.

First, they had to decide what 'best' meant - some children decided to measure the texture, some measured the height of bubbles whereas some opted to time how quickly the bubbles took to pop.

It was a brilliant opportunity for the children to consolidate their understanding of controlled variables.

Year 6 Scientists

What a BRILLIANT Friday!

Year 6 have really enjoyed their morning's learning- today we spent the morning being scientists. We needed to solve a problem: the space scientists at NASA want to keep a pet hamster on their next flight but so far, they haven't been able to identify a suitable hamster bedding- they keep experiencing leaks!

We started by considering the desirable properties of the material and thought about how we could test a range of materials to enable us to compare these properties. Using our developing knowledge of fair testing, we worked as small research teams to plan and carry out investigations to test which materials were the most absorbent.

Some of our methods worked better than others! We learned a lot about fair testing and making some mistakes was useful- we considered our results to evaluate their reliability and repeatability and identified some ways we could improve or extend our investigations.

Keep an eye out for our photos so you can see us in action!

"This investigation was really fun- my favourite part was when my team used the pipettes to squirt water onto the nappy material samples!"

"I thoroughly enjoyed today's lesson: it was different and we were able to collaborate with other students. This lesson helped me to listen to other people- it was great!"

"I really enjoyed today's investigation because it made me realise what I could do better and improve. also, I was able to collaborate with different people and it made me feel like a real scientist!"

"I found the experiment fun today- we conducted the whole experiment from beginning to end in one morning. Working as a group had a big impact on the work; everyone was able to do something related to the task. We got to a very satisfying conclusion as well!"

Year 6 - Electrifying Elder Class

In Elder Class, we have been enjoying the start of our new science topic - electricity!

We spent time discussing our prior knowledge and developing interesting research questions that we hope to test in the coming weeks.

Our first challenge was to create a human circuit to demonstrate the flow of electrons. We had to use a variety of communication and teamwork skills, as well as demonstrating our scientific knowledge!

Year 6 is certainly full of bright sparks!

Mini Scientists in 'Hawchard' (Orchard and Hawthorn) Aim to Recover Materials!

Orchard and Hawthorn join together again for Part 2 of our Science investigation.
Last week, we focused on mixing materials and creating solutions; although this week we investigated how we could recover these materials using evaporation, filtration and sieving.

We were given a sieve, filter paper, a colander and a saucepan! We had to work together to investigate which of these were suitable to separate:

- coffee & water
- sugar & water
- salt & water
- rice & water
- sand & water

After we had tested evaporation, filtration and sieving, we concluded which were the most suitable and fastest to separate soluble and insoluble materials.

It was great fun testing these different separation methods and enabled us to identify whether these were reversible or irreversible changes.

Can you predict which separation method worked best for our materials?
