Coding in Year 6 - Computing

For the last couple of weeks, the children in Year 6 have developed their understanding of coding by creating an operable game.

To begin with, the children created codes to move sprites (characters) in various directions. They were then challenged to add a secondary character, add actions and add obstacles. Some children were also able to modify and personalise their sprite so it looked like them! Children then learnt about algorithms and how these are used as sets of instructions.

Y6 Elm have been getting practical!

In Computing recently, Year 6 Elm thoroughly enjoyed developing sequencing in their coding skills, using studio.code.org/s/express-2020

In Science, they have been identifying the components used in circuits, investigating and comparing series to parallel circuits.

Year 6 Aspen Computing- coding

In our Computing session, we used Code Studio (an online programme) to play some games and tasks that teach coding skills. We had to write code to move something to a specific place on the screen, but some of the games have very difficult mazes to navigate through! we worked in pairs so we had someone to work with when the tasks got difficult.

"The reason I like Computing is because you can play different games to learn- it's really fun."

"The Code Studio games are hard- there are a lot of different ways you can do it so you have to test and try out different solutions. Some of them don't work at all! We worked together to find a solution that worked. "
