YEAR 4 - London Symphony Orchestra!

On Wednesday 4th May, Year 4 went to to the Barbican Centre to hear the London Symphony Orchestra play. The concert was music by female composers, including a piece called Spark Catchers.  You can hear the London Symphony Orchestra playing some of it here.

There was also music by Florence Price, which you can explore here.

The children got to sing with the orchestra; a song all about cheese!

LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

The London Symphony Orchestra digital team are currently working hard to help keep children busy with musical activities.  In the mean time, their site LSO Play has plenty to explore.

https://play.lso.co.uk/performances

When you click 'play' on a performance, the screen will split into sections and you can zoom in to difference sections of the Orchestra.  See how many different instruments you can spot.  The menu sign in the top right of the performance screen opens up behind the scenes information and interviews.

If you are able to download the ibook behind the piece by Debussy, you might spot some people you know!

Music in Year 6

Three Ideas!

Year 6 have started preparing for their music trip, later this term, to see the London Symphony Orchestra.

We have revised our rhythm and pitch reading to learn fragments of a piece of music.
Using these 3 ideas (Bass, middle and melody) we will play an ensemble piece.

Once we have learnt these ideas, we will start to alter them to compose our own music.

This link will take you to the LSO play website where you can hear one of the pieces of music that year 6 are going to be studying this term.

For the first part of this term we are using ideas from 'Orawa' by the Polish composer Wojciech Kilar.  The music has a repetative pattern and tells the story of a river.

Can you work out the note pitches that year 6 have been using?

Troll stroll in Year 4

On Friday 27th September, children from Ash and Poplar classes got together for a Music lesson that left everyone with a smile!

Children used the hall to learn about symphonic poems for orchestra. In particular, The Golden Spinning Wheel by Antonín Dvořák.

In this tale, a troll named Gnomus goes travelling through a forest. Children started by thinking about what a terrible troll might look like. We then learned to count and keep a steady beat of 6, which we actually found easier by counting in French!

Once we had a steady rhythm, groups of children got into lines and used their counting and skipped beats to create a Troll Stroll that Gnomus might be seen doing through the Forest.

The results were hilarious! Despite having some 'terrifying' creatures in front of them, children still managed to keep it together and count a steady beat!

Music - Life could be a dream .....

Here's a sneak peak at some of the things Year 6 have been up to with the London Symphony Orchestra the week....

They were visited by the LSO education leader, Rachel Leach, who worked with them to produce work based around a piece of music. This work will be used as an online resource for other schools.

Bannockburn Primary School was asked because of the fantastic work that the children produced with the orchestra last year.

The children composed an epic piece of music - longer than the original.

They then performed it for Year 3 Olive and Hazel classes.

Year 5 - The wonderful world of musical images through sound...

Have you ever created images through the wonders of music?
Year 5 Hawthorn have!

We composed our own music using percussion instruments. The London Symphony Orchestra came into school and helped teach us how valuable and creative music is, and we created musical images together through sound!
