International Day and Evening 2022 - show your support and get involved!

On Thursday 24th March, all children at both Manor Way and High Street sites will be celebrating our annual International Day, where children will experience a range of cultural activities and learn more about our wider world in a variety of global education workshops.

Children may wear non-school uniform and we would love to see either bright colours that represent the flag of a chosen country or children may wear traditional clothing and accessories (but no jewellery please) that reflect their own heritage and culture.

We are also looking for home-made edible contributions from all different cultures for the evening’s community event. If you would like to contribute something to this event, please add your name to the boards which will be displayed after-school at HS and MW sites in the coming days or email into school with details of what you are able to prepare.

In addition to your food donation (in a container labelled with your child’s name and class) you would need to supply us with an ingredients list and basic storage instructions, so as to ensure allergen information can be provided to the community attending the evening. The dishes will need to be brought into school (either site) on Thursday 24th March.

Year 1 World Travel Day

In Year One we have been reading 'Turtle, Turtle, Watch Out' by April Pulley Sayre. We learnt that turtles travel the world's oceans. We also learned about how people travel around the world with passports. Each class became a country where turtles are found and children spent time learning in each county: South Africa, Galápagos Islands, Costa Rica and Malaysia.

Polish school partnership - Pollution in Poland

Some children from Grade 5 (equivalent Year 6) at a school in Poland called Zespół Szkolno-Przedszkolny w Chynowie got in contact with Mrs Seaton, after they heard about our local area & pollution-themed photography competition. They wanted to see what our local area is like and what kinds of pollution problems we suffer with in South East London; their school is in a village called Chynów, which is in a rural area approximately 40km from Warsaw (capital city). They have sent us some pollution-themed photos from their town. It looks like they have a problem with litter and fly-tipping... what could they do to help stop this?

It is hoped we might exchange letters with this school in the future and work on some more projects together - tell your International Team rep(s) about any ideas you on how we can collaborate!

European Day of Languages 2018

This week, to celebrate European day of Languages on 26th September, different classes have been sharing their experiences of different languages and discussing how useful and important they will be in their future lives.

All classes have undertaken surveys to find out just how many languages are currently spoken in our school, and the results are now proudly displayed on our classroom doors, showcasing our diversely multicultural and multilingual school community.

In Year 5 we had a special EDoL lesson, where , among doing lots of languages-based activities, we also watched a video of a spectacular 4 year old Russian polyglot - do you know what a polyglot is?

Watch the video link below to find out....

We also had some great discussion and debates about languages, with some very insightful comments.

"It shows that now matter how young or old you are, you can learn languages" - Year 5 Rowan Tree pupil

"It inspires me to learn more languages" - Year 5 Rowan Tree pupil

"When you can speak someone's language, like sign language, it can make them feel like they are part of something" - Year 5 Rowan Tree Pupil
