Juniper Tree enjoyed exploring different materials in the Science Museum! 

Year 2 materials!

In Science, Year 2 are learning about materials. We investigated ways to change material and discussed why some materials are suitable for objects and why some are not. We then had a look at a variety of materials and discussed the properties of materials and ways in which you can change the materials.

Science- Hawthorn

This half term in Science, Year 5 have been investigating the properties of materials.

We have conducted many experiments, including:

• Mixing cornflour and water
• Comparing and grouping together everyday materials based on their properties (hardness, solubility, transparency, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and their response to magnets).
• Investigating what changes are reversible? - melting chocolate - freezing water - creating salt solution
• Showing that dissolving, mixing and changes of state are reversible changes.
• Understanding what are filtering, sieving and evaporation - rice and water in a sieve - coffee and filter paper - evaporating salt solution
• Investigating what changes are irreversible?  - cutting open an apple (oxidation) - bicarbonate of soda and vinegar (creates CO2)  - coke and mentos (creates CO2) - turning cream in to butter

They have been recording their experiments in their books with

- hypotheses and predictions

- results tables

- conclusions

They have also converted the results of one test into graphs on laptops in a Computing lesson.

Year 2 Science - Materials

This term we have been learning about materials and how materials can change. We investigated various ways we could change certain materials by bending, squeezing, twisting, pulling or squashing. We also discovered that some materials cannot be changed or manipulated. 

Year 5 Science

In Science this half term, Year 5 have been studying 'Properties and changes in materials.'

They investigated solubility and reversible changes.

They tested various substances to see if they would mix with water to form a solution. Some materials were soluble and dissolved in the water. Some materials were insoluble and separated from the water. 

We left the solutions out for a couple of days in the sun and warmth. Eventually the water from the salt solution and the sugar solution evaporated. Due to the water turning from a liquid into a gas, it left behind the salt and the sugar. Therefore, these were reversible changes. 

The children know four different separation techniques; filtering, sieving, magnetism and as seen in this experiment, evaporation. 

Making plastic in Year 5.

Today in Science, Year 5 made plastic!

Using warm milk (with some food dye for colour) and vinegar, the children observed how the two liquids curdled when they mixed together. This produced small lumps of curd, showing how two liquids can make a solid. They could also explain how this was an irreversible change.
