Similes and Metaphors in Year 6 - Writing / English

This week, as part of our Tale of Fear sequence, children have been exploring the world of metaphors and similes.

Children were given a variety of images and challenged to create a metaphor or simile for each image based on an eerie setting.

They absolutely loved being able to experiment with vocabulary, personification and imagery and generated some fantastic ideas to share with the class.

Well done Year 6!

Reception- Handa's Surprise

As part of our learning linked to Handa's Surprise, the children drew observational drawings of the fruits in Handa's basket. They identified the initial sound of each fruit and wrote the letter next to the drawings.

To help us retell Handa's Surprise we drew and created our own story maps.

A Spooky Surprise in Year 6 - English / Writing

This term, the children in Year 6 will be learning how to write a fantastic character description!

So... to kick things off with a BANG, the Year 6 teachers decided to surprise the children by dressing up as a character from Harry Potter. The teachers acted in the role of their character for the whole morning as children were tasked with observing carefully to identify how their character spoke and acted.

Children had to try and record their teacher's mannerisms and their gestures; they also needed to carefully consider how their teacher spoke, paying particular attention to the tone and intonation used.

This will help their learning going forward where children will be learning how to use pathetic fallacy, non-verbal cues and dialogue to describe a character.
