Lime and Juniper go to the mosque!

This term in RE, Year 1 have been learning about Islam. They have learnt about what Muslims believe, why the Quran is important to Muslims, Islamic stories and what takes place in a Mosque. We then visited the Local mosque: Greenwich Islamic Centre. On our way we spotted the moon minaret. When we got there,  an Imam spoke about what Islam is and what takes place inside a mosque. Year 3 - Learning about Judaism

This week Year 3 looked at the importance of 'Shabbat' for Jewish people. We worked in table groups to look at what a 'Shabbat' table contains and what each item represents. We discussed how challenging we might find having a whole 24 hours without any form of technology every week!

In the Jewish faith, people celebrate 'Shabbat' every Friday evening by turning off all electronic devices and sharing a specially prepared meal and saying prayers. The weekly ritual highlights the importance of marking how God rested after creating the world. Wine is shared, bread is split and candles are lit to pay respect.

Year 6 - RE - Faith and Beliefs in Greenwich

In Year 6, we looked at the religious landscape of our local area. In order to do this, we examined the 2021 census. By doing this, we noticed that the amount of people who follow a religion has increased; we also noticed the population has increased. Once we had a good understanding of the local area, we compared our findings to the religious landscape of our school. We found out that both Christianity and Islam are the most followed religions in Greenwich and at Bannockburn.

'It was interesting to see the religions in our class because it helped us to understand each other.'

'I think that the religious landscape of Greenwich has changed because of the population increase.'

P4C in Year 6 - RE / Religious Education

This term, we have been learning about religion in our local community.

Children have explored their own beliefs by completing a reflection survey; they have learnt about the religions present at Bannockburn and in Greenwich, considering the positive impact the diversity of religion brings to our community; they have explored how faith and belief has changed in Greenwich over the last 50 years and they have discussed how faith communities support people.

This week, children took part in a Philosophy for Children session (P4C) where we explored the question:

Do you need to have a faith or belief to have values?

Children started the lesson by exploring their pre-lesson views about religion and values, marking groups of people on a scale of morality. From this, children discussed and challenged each other's views on the subject.

Have a look at the quotes below to see how some children's views were challenged and changed.

"At first, I thought you had to have a religion to have values but then I realised that anyone can have values if they have been taught them."

"My view didn't change. I have always thought that anyone could have values. I'm not religious but I have values."

"Our school has school values that everyone follows and shows - this is not linked to religion."

"At the start of the lesson, I thought that people who were religious would have more values. At the end of the lesson, I realised that values can be taught in religious books but also by people who are not religious."

"Values can be taught. Religious leaders, parents, teachers, friends and family can teach us values."

"Most religions teach the same values, such as being kind, being supportive and being helpful. "

We are really proud of the Year 6 children for discussing this topic in a courteous, mature manner and, ultimately, showing lots of our school values! Well done!

Year 3 - RE - How did the world begin?

In this week's RE lesson, we continued to look at what different faiths believe about the creation of the world. This week, we discussed how Muslim people believe that Allah is the creator of the world and everything in it. We learnt about how Muslim people show thanks to Allah through appreciation of nature, looking after the world and prayer. We appreciated nature by heading to Forest School, selecting our leaves and doing a leaf rubbing.

Y3 RE: Why is the world so special?

For our first week of learning in Religious Education, Year 3 discussed why our world (and all of the important living things within in it) is so special. We looked closely at different natural living things, such as insects, wood and wool. We discussed how they were all so intricately made and how each living thing is wonderfully unique. We came to the understanding that every living thing, including human beings is uniquely special and therefore important. We drew the conclusion that we will always try our best to show love and respect to all people and animals in our world.
