Last week our Year 5 had a jam-packed week of fun learning projects, which included them learning a French pop song.

Here is the link if you want to hear it and join in to practise with us.

Mama Africa by Kids United celebrates the cultural diversity of Africa and the happy positive vibes that come from there.

International Day and Evening 2022 - show your support and get involved!

On Thursday 24th March, all children at both Manor Way and High Street sites will be celebrating our annual International Day, where children will experience a range of cultural activities and learn more about our wider world in a variety of global education workshops.

Children may wear non-school uniform and we would love to see either bright colours that represent the flag of a chosen country or children may wear traditional clothing and accessories (but no jewellery please) that reflect their own heritage and culture.

We are also looking for home-made edible contributions from all different cultures for the evening’s community event. If you would like to contribute something to this event, please add your name to the boards which will be displayed after-school at HS and MW sites in the coming days or email into school with details of what you are able to prepare.

In addition to your food donation (in a container labelled with your child’s name and class) you would need to supply us with an ingredients list and basic storage instructions, so as to ensure allergen information can be provided to the community attending the evening. The dishes will need to be brought into school (either site) on Thursday 24th March.

Bannockburn celebrates European Day of Languages 2020

This day is celebrated on 26th September every year in countries across Europe.

The objectives of the day are: to encourage people to think about the importance of learning languages; to encourage lifelong learning of languages for everyone; and to promote European languages.

At Bannockburn we celebrate all languages, not just European ones!

We always display our multilingual classroom signs outside our doors.

This year you can enter the official EdoL T-shirt design competition - ask your class teacher for a form to enter!

French poetry appreciation: Chère frère blanc by Léopold Sédar Senghor

Bonjour tout le monde!

There has been lots in the news about the Black Lives Matter movement and I think at Bannockburn we do a really great job of promoting values like respect, equality, tolerance and fairness, as well as making sure everyone learns about diversity, equal opportunities and how society has changed through history.

Whilst doing some reading of my own, I came across this brilliantly thought-provoking French poem
calle Chère frère blanc or Dear White Brother in English by poet Léopold Sédar Senghor.

You can listen to the poem and follow it using the link below and the text - use your knowledge of the colours and to help work out the meaning of the different sentences.

Quand tu as grandi, tu étais blanc,
Quand tu vas au soleil, tu es rouge,
Quand tu as froid, tu es bleu,
Quand tu as peur, tu es vert,
Quand tu es malade, tu es jaune,
Quand tu mourras, tu seras gris.

Alors, de nous deux,
Qui est l'homme de couleur ?

If you want to find out more about the author - a Senegalese poet, write, politician and campaigner called Léopold Sédar Senghor there is biographical video link below.

Working towards a fully inclusive society

"It is a shameful fact that racism is still prevalent in our society, and around the globe. While the world may have changed a lot since the days of slavery and segregation, there is still much to be done - by all of us - to level the playing field and help black people and others of colour reach a position where they can live their lives without being subjected to racism, either overt or subtle; personal or systemic. This is why Into Film supports the Black Lives Matter movement."
