In Year 2 we are learning how to create a balanced argument. Goldilocks has been stealing and breaking things that do not belong to her. This week, we are discussing whether she should or should not go to prison.
But first, we had to create some wanted posters in order to catch her!
Today in Year 3, we took part in our hook lesson for this half term's fiction writing.
Our new model text is called Perseus and Medusa which is a well known ancient Greek myth.
We explored the following extract that describes the character of Medusa.
Medusa was a hideous creature, with claw-like hands and tusks for teeth. She was the most fearsome and repulsive monster in the land. Instead of hair, she had venomous snakes that hissed liked angry roaches. She had scaly, brittle skin and blood-shot fiery, eyes like a raging devil. Anyone who made eye contact with her would instantly be turned to stone.
Using this information, we created our own Medusa masks to help us better understand the text.
Have you ever wondered what a Frost Dragon looks like? In fact, they are similar to the majority of dragons. Like most Dragons, they have huge wings, large jaws, a spiny back and a long tail. Typically, they are a sparkling white or silver colour. However, some have been spotted that are an icy blue.
Furthermore, their teeth are made of diamonds and look like icicles. The main feature of this dragon is the fact that it does not breathe flames. They breathe frost and snow.
A few dragons of this variety have the ability to breathe on any creature and freeze it to stone, particularly if they feel in danger. Additionally , they all have webbed feet that they use for swimming.
We then used this information to help us create our own Frost Dragons.
This week in Year 2 we have been introduced to our new English core text... The Tunnel by Anthony Browne.
As part of our learning, we explored what it would be like to crawl through a narrow tunnel like the characters in the story.
What could be lurking inside?
Year 5 are beginning their new unit of work in English - explanation writing. Next week, we will be writing explanations about how our chosen spy gadget works. In order to show our teachers which explanation features we can already use, we wrote explanation texts about the life cycle of these fictional animals! Have a go yourself - we did a great job at making each other laugh while thinking of ideas!
"I liked mixing the life cycles of mammals and amphibians for my creature."
"I decided to make my Hippogriph lay eggs into a fire. I wrote a paragraph about this part of the life cycle."
"I remembered to include a heading, subheadings, opening paragraph and time adverbials. I will need to practise using technical vocabulary."
A Waddlebrock
Year 4 have had a brilliant time in English over the last few weeks using Talk for Writing to learn an instructional text for ‘How to Trap an Iron Man’. We learnt about the features of instructions, including how to use imperative verbs and adverbs of manner to write sequences steps.
Then we adapted our class text and changed it to create our own instructions. We had great fun thinking about the metal objects that might lure the Iron Man into the trap!
Miss Bethell was really impressed with our writing this week. We published our work to create our own leaflets, which parents can hopefully read at our Parents Evenings next week!
