Exploring magnets- Year 3

This week, we began learning about our new Science topic, Forces and Magnets. We discussed what a magnet was as well as a magnetic field. To further understand how a magnet works, we used metal objects that would be attracted by the magnet and discussed how close the magnet has to get before the object entered its magnetic field. We used iron fillings to help us see this even more clearly.

We then explored the classroom hunting for objects that were magnetic or non magnetic and discussed why this might be.

Fun with Forces in Year 3 (Science visit)

Today, Year 3 had a fantastic time exploring magnets and forces during a visit from a scientist! First, we practised measuring forces in Newtons using various spring scales. After this, we explored magnetism with a range of metals and magnets. We also learnt about air resistance and how rockets are launched through watching some exciting investigations involving a leaf blower and explosions with vinegar!
