Year 3 DT: Sandal Making

Today we learnt about the kind of footwear Ancient Greeks would have worn. We identified the importance of weaving in the design of the sandals and had a go at this ourselves. We then discussed what a designer would need to consider when making shoes for the Ancient Greeks. We discussed our ideas and added them to a mind map to refer back to throughout the coming weeks when we begin to plan and make our own Ancient Greek sandals.

Bannockburn's Arts Pupil Leadership Group

Last week, some members of the Arts Group met to begin making posters to advertise next year's International Evening. They had discussions about various design options and begun to choose images that they would like to use.

Year 2 solve Maths problems!

In Maths , we spent time solving worded Maths problems. We done this by read and understanding what the word problems were asking us. We then used our knowledge of addition and subtraction to solve the problems. We used a variety of manipulatives to help us.

Meet Bannockburn's Values Team!

The Values Pupil Leadership Group met last week for their first meeting. They did an activity called 'Diamond Nines' which saw them working in small groups of mixed ages to discuss some of the aspects of their life that they value. They then had to order them, with their most valued at the top, discussing their choices as they went. The Year 2 and 3 children did a brilliant job at explaining their thoughts to the older children and the older children were amazing at encouraging the younger ones to have their say. They then repeated the task with some of the school values.

Lots of interesting views were shared and listened to - well done Values Team!

Year 2 Beech Tree trip to Greenwich Mandir

Year 2 went to visit Greenwich Mandir to support their learning on Hinduism. We had a fantastic time learning about the rituals that take place in the Mandir, 5 key Hindu festivals and had a look at the statues. Thank you to Greenwich Mandir for taking the time to talk to us and well done Beech Tree for your fantastic behaviour and the keen interest you showed.

Year 6 Art - Totem Poles

In Art this half term, the students in Year 6 have designed, made and evaluated their own totem poles. This links to their learning in Humanities as during the time of the Ancient Maya, many individuals carried totem poles which contained glyphs, designs and animalistic features.

To create their totem poles, the Year 6 students used wire and clay. First, they shaped their wires before using a slip solution to add clay to them. Finally, the students used instruments to carve and design their totem poles.

Year 5 London Symphony Orchestra Trip

Year 5 had a fantastic time on their trip to the LSO this week.  The concert used orchestral music, combined with traditional Indian music to tell the story of Diwali.

In the weeks leading up to the concert, they looked at how some of the music they would hear was composed, and explored different rhythms and ragas used in Indian music.

They explored how music can be used to illustrate events in a story.
