Open Sound Ensemble

LSO is delighted to let you know that applications for our next Open Sound Ensemble course on Thursday 27 & Friday 28 July are now open, and they would love to welcome you along.

Please apply latest Friday 14 July.

Open Sound Ensemble is a music group for young people of secondary school age with special educational needs and disabilities, based in South London. The Summer Open Sound Ensemble Course will be back at Woolwich Works (map) in Woolwich Arsenal!

Information about the course

Working as an ensemble alongside specialist workshop leaders John and Dav and musicians from the London Philharmonic Orchestra, we will rehearse and perform our own music. We will use a mixture of both traditional and accessible digital instruments to explore sounds, rhythms and melodies, and devise new music together. We will be interacting with each other as an ensemble, sometimes following cues from the LPO team and each other, and sometimes making our own creative decisions. Instruments will be provided, but you are very welcome to bring your own.

Young people will have the option of being part of the morning or afternoon group. Please find a bit of information below about the group identities:

Morning group: for young people with a little or no prior musical experience. They might have explored a little bit of hand-held percussion (drums, shakers, tambourines) at school or in music therapy sessions, or have encountered an instrument a couple of times.

Afternoon group: for young people with more musical experience – maybe they have played a particular instrument in the past or play one now (e.g. piano, guitar, recorder) or they sing.

We will try and give you the times you select in your application form but we cannot promise this will be possible.  All young people who attend must be accompanied by an adult throughout the sessions.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss your application any further then please get in touch with Hannah.

Wellbeing and Mental Health- Self-Care Bingo

The school holidays can often be a time of over-indulging and little physical activity. We may be enjoying ourselves, but we may also be neglecting our wellbeing.

A fun way to get the whole family involved in looking after ourselves, is to play a game of bingo.

Tick off every time you do a good deed, have a good laugh, or do something fun, and see how quickly you can yell BINGO!

Ages  5-7

Ages 7 -11

The Jar of Happiness activity is a great one to do before the New Year, and at this time next year, you could be looking back at all the fun things you’ve done.

Thank you to the people at imoves.com

They have lots of tips and advice on why being active is good for us all.

Looking after your mental health and wellbeing over the holidays, and during a pandemic!

No matter whether you celebrate Christmas or not, the festive period is different for everyone.
It may be something you look forward to, or it may be a time of year you find a bit tough.
What the holiday period brings will be individual to each of us.

There are many websites that provide tips and advice.

Some have suggestions that are particularly relevant during Covid-19 restrictions.
"This year we are seeing my sister, who lives alone and we are her support bubble. We are going to make it as festive and cosy as we can, given the pandemic."

Young Minds have a Wellbeing Advent Calendar with lots of great ideas.

Summer Holiday Links and Ideas

The long summer holiday is almost here, and some parents may be wondering about the kinds of activities available to keep children entertained, amused and occupied.

Bannockburn is running its own Summer Play Scheme this year, which many of the children will be attending. If you haven't been allocated a place there are lots of alternatives around the Local Area.

The first place to look is here, at the Greenwich Local Offer website, which has links to things to do in the borough.

Home Start Greenwich runs lots of trips and events over the summer, and information can be found here in the 'Activities & Events' section. A timetable for each of their centres can be accessed here.

For older children who are interested in Theatre and Performance, Greenwich and Lewisham's Young People's Theatre has a programme of summer workshops which you can view here.

Links to other local summer play-schemes are listed here.

Hope everyone has a lovely summer and if you're staying at home, then here is a great list of Boredom Buster activities ...

But remember, it is also ok for children to (occasionally) experience boredom - it's a great way to let their minds wander, and to encourage their creativity.
