Talk For Writing - The Very Hungry Caterpillar Nursery

This week in Nursery, we embarked on an exciting journey with our very first talk for writing lesson, inspired by the delightful book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle. As a class, we collaboratively crafted our own unique story to boost our confidence in reading and writing skills.

To kick off our adventure, we created a colourful story map, outlining the sequence of events in our tale. Each child contributed ideas, and we worked together to visualise the caterpillar's journey through vibrant fruit illustrations. Once our story map was complete, we took it a step further by adding lively actions that corresponded with each part of the story.

The highlight of our lesson was when we acted out the roles of the hungry caterpillar and pretended to munch on a variety of delicious fruits, from juicy strawberries to plump plums. The laughter and joy in the classroom were contagious as we immersed ourselves in the caterpillar's world, helping to solidify our understanding of storytelling in a fun and engaging way.

Year 3 - English - Mythical Monsters!

During our English lessons this week, Year 3 have taken part in learning about the mythical creatures of Ancient Greece.

We started the term by learning our new model text 'Perseus and Medusa' before discussing what made Medusa such a fascinating mythical creature and why stories of these hideous beasts have been passed down through generations.

Using the descriptive language from our model text, we were then challenged to create our very own Medusa masks! Here are some photos from our learning:

Y3 Drama in English - Stone Age Boy

This week, Year 3 went to the Manor Way Forest School for the first time! All classes got to act out the moment our main character gets transported from a muddy path to a mountain top in our English focus text: Stone Age Boy. We really enjoyed using real-life props such as stones, sticks and boulders to add dramatic effect to this very important scene. We are looking forward to visiting our fantastic Forest School soon for more practical learning outdoors.

Tunnels in Year 2!

In English this half term, Year 2 will be learning how to describe different settings. To help us with our learning, Year 2 will be focusing on the text 'The Tunnel'. To help the children engage with the story we set up a spooky tunnel to help the children understand the concept of 'portal stories'. Here are some of the brave children entering it!

Amazing writers in Year 1!

This week in English, Damson Tree have been writing a class story. First, we drew a story map of the Three Billy Goats Gruff and used actions to help us learn the text. We then changed the characters in the story to three ponies who wanted to eat some delicious carrots and a very mean giant! We rehearsed parts of the text each day and practised writing these on whiteboards. We all worked incredibly hard to use our phonics sounds, correctly spell our ‘harder to read’ words and remember our punctuation.
