Year 4 Debate
In English, this term, pupils have been learning to write a balanced argument. We explored various topics to discuss and thought about the language that was used in debates.
Pupils shared their opinions on the topic of whether canals were a safe place to visit and using the appropriate vocabulary, engaged in a respectful debate.
Some of the children in Aspen enjoyed using pasta shapes to add speech marks to dialogue.
To introduce our writing topic, tales of fear, the Year 6 children participated in a Philosophy for Children lesson. In this lesson, they read a story which described the misfortune of two siblings after they decided to enter a haunted house. After reading the story, the children discussed the underlying themes and highlighted how the author chose to explore ideas of trust, bravery, loyalty and fear. Once they had identified the themes, they worked together to generate 'big questions' about the text - some of these can be seen below.
This term in Year 6, we are writing a tale of fear.
In our tales, we hope to create an intense atmosphere and a feeling of suspense. Therefore, we studied an image of an eerie setting and discussed how we can create similes and metaphors which intrigue the reader. This included discussing the use of appropriate comparisons as well as relevant adjectives, verbs and adverbs.

Year 2 have begun a new Talk for Writing text, 'Peter and the Wolf'. To introduce the children to the text, the whole of Year 2 designed and created warning signs! Take a look at some of our signs below.
As part of our learning sequence, we took ourselves to Forest School to act out washing a lion! We took it in turns to put into action all of the imperative (bossy!) verbs we would be including in our written instructions. We washed, scrubbed, rinsed, brushed and even filed our lion's nails to make sure he looked his very best.
