Year 4 visit the Natural History Museum

This week, Year 4 visited the Natural History Museum to find out all about volcanos and earthquakes. We even got to experience our very own earthquake simulator!

We worked in groups to answer questions about the exhibit as well as explored the interactive activities.

We had a little time to spare at the end so we went to see the precious rocks and stones on display. We even managed to find some volcanic rocks!

We can't wait for our next trip together!

We are Inspired - Bannockburn Year 6 attend WE Day Concert at Wembley

A group of Year 6 children, along with Mrs Seaton and Mr Clark, attended the WE Day UK event at Wembley SSE Arena on Wednesday 4th March.

The day included inspirational speeches from a number of high-profile activists, celebrities and spokespeople, such as Jamie Oliver, Spencer West, Maya Ghazal, Lewis Hamilton, Julia Gillard, Idris Elba and Yusra Mardini.

There were also some great performances from Leona Lewis,Callum Scott and others, plus there was even an afrobeat dance performance from Princess K with her brothers.

It was a long but brilliant day and we very nearly rode the entire Jubilee line to get there!

Home to Royal Museums Greenwich's collection and conservation team: Free tours telling the local community's maritime story. Set on the grounds of a former RAF base in Kidbrooke, The Royal Museums Greenwich store thousands of collections in the stores which once was a barrage balloon depot in the second world war. Visitors to the Prince Philip Maritime Collection Centre will see a contrast of architecture with our new state of the art stores and conservation studios next to the former RAF buildings. Despite storing the museum’s collection since the early 1970’s – members of the public have rarely had the chance to see the behind scenes. With the collection comprising of 2.5 million objects, the vast majority are kept in storage, generally out of public view. Many items are genuine treasures of the Museum, which can occasionally be shown in exhibitions but over the Heritage Open Days the public will be able to see this Aladdin’s cave of treasures.
As part of Heritage open days and the launch of our public facing programmes, we are embracing the theme of ‘People Power’ by supporting our local community groups to curate their own tours through our collection. Visitors will get a truly unique take on the store experience as local groups select items from the collection, which tell a story about their heritage or back ground.

Explore and handle original documents, annual reports, minutes, crockery, certificates, letters, photos and architectural plans, uncovering their stories.
We will also be running a family activity sharing your school memories.
The Deptford Ragged School was founded in 1844, twenty-seven years before the State began providing education for all children. It was started in a loft over a cowshed as a Day School and a Sunday School. As many children as possible were crammed into a rented room to learn how to read and write, and very often to be fed too. It was one of the first twenty ragged schools exclusively run for 'ragged children', so called because they were dressed in rags with bare feet in all weathers.
We are currently documenting the archive, making it publicly available hoping to become an accredited museum, and we’re keen to share what we’re finding with the community.

Football fever with Charlton Ladies FC

On Sunday 25th November children and their families braved the cold weather to attend a fun-filled day of football organised by Charlton Athletic. The ladies team had a league match against another local team and our children were invited as special guests for the day with their families.

On parent said, "A great turn out from Bannockburn school, thanks for the free tickets.
Great behaviour from our kids and a great time had by all - even in the cold!"

We already work with Charlton Athletic on lots of different projects and look forward to more opportunities and events for the Bannockburn community.

Spanish Cinema Trip at Greenwich Picturehouse

On Wednesday 7th November members of the Year 5 and 6 Spanish club (along with some other keen and able linguists) attended a special screening of Zipi y Zape y el club de la canica (Zip & Zap and The Marble Gang) at Greenwich Picturehouse cinema, as part of the Into Film Festival 2018.

The film is a remake of the old comic book stories and TV series that Marta, our Spanish Club teacher, remembers reading and watching as a child in Spain.

Some feedback for the children included:

"The film was really funny!"

"I heard lots of words that sound like English... lots of cognates."

"It was hard sometimes to watch and read the subtitles so it inspires me to be fluent in Spanish when I am older."

Year 5 Reward Trip to the Tate Modern

On the 13th March 2018, selected children from Year 5 went to the Tate Modern on a Reward Trip with Ms Sikkens to explore how we experience feelings through exploring art.

The main attraction was, of course, the Super Flex exhibition in the colossal Turbine Hall.

This exhibition is all about playing, cooperating and having fun together and consists of about 20 swings, with enough room for 3 to swing together.

Check out the smiley faces!

"Miss, I didn't know that a gallery could be this much fun!"

In the other half of the Turbine Hall, when it was clear enough not to disturb members of the public, we rolled down the rainbow hill under the giant swinging pendulum!

We also went to the top of the viewing gallery to look at the London Skyline:

Finally, we looked at other art in the free exhibitions. The children couldn't believe that they were really standing in front of the actual works of art that had been created by some very famous and influential artists. Everybody recognised Matisse from a project in Year 3. Look at how BIG some of his original work is!

Kandinsky was also popular because his use of colour and shapes made everyone feel happy and playful.

Some art work was very new and had us staring at it for ages...

Some art was made by us by drawing into the orange carpet wall. It felt lovely and soft.

Of course, no trip would be complete without documenting the packed lunch!

"One of the best reward trips, ever!"

Junior Language Challenge Semi Finals

In March 2017 a team of budding linguists from Bannockburn took part in the Junior Language Challenge, run by Utalk in order to raise money for the children's charity 1 Billion. After lots of hours of studying French in their spare time, we had one competitor, Ashish from Year 6, who got through to the second round, where the new language to learn and be tested on was Japanese!

On Thursday 14th September Ashish and Miss Ansell from Bannockburn visited Cranmore School in Horsley for the live semi-finals, where he competed in a live Japanese language challenge against 30 other children from schools across the South-East of England. Ashish came 5th and whilst he narrowly missed out on a place in the final (where the final language to be challenged will be Zulu!) we are all extremely impressed by his newly acquired language skills and are very proud of his fantastic efforts.

Well done Ashish!

The next Junior Language Challenge will start in March 2018, so Miss Ansell will keep you posted!

Days Out for Children with Additional Needs

As part of my role as SENCO I occasionally have the pleasure of accompanying classes on their educational trips and visits. On Thursday this week I joined the whole of the Reception Year group on their day out to Colchester Zoo.

To support the teaching team with particular needs of individual children I suggested that we put together a Social Story in advance, showing what will happen on the day. When I investigated further, I was happy to find that Colchester Zoo already had their own version available on line. Although this version was probably more suited to an older age group, we were able to adapt and make use of the story to help support children's understanding of what we might see or do on our trip to the zoo.

Colchester Zoo also have a dedicated part of their website outlining access and support for any visitors with additional needs, which certainly helped me in supporting the Reception Team on this trip.

If you are a parent or carer of a child with additional needs, planning any days out at weekends or during holiday time, you may find some of the ideas on the Scope or Skybadger websites useful. There is also lots of information and helpful advice to be found here:

https://www.dayoutwiththekids.co.uk/

Alternatively you can always come and speak with me, Mary Long (SENCO for EYFS and KS1) or any member of the Inclusion Team.
