Rowan class become budding architects!

As part of Arts Weeks, on Tuesday Rowan class took to the playground to get a real-time view of the Manor Way site.

The children started by focussing very carefully on composition and drew the outline of the Lodge and KS2 school building. They used considered pencil lines, different pressures and blending to add a third dimension to their drawings.

The children kept the idea of scale in mind as they thoughtfully filled in the outline with the buildings details: windows, doors, lights and spires.

Year 4 Create Cushion Covers!

Today, Year 4 Pine class designed and began to create cushion covers with a nature theme. The children chose their design using nature as their inspiration.

First, pupils drew simple trees, flowers and animals. Once they were happy with their design, they used pencils to transfer the outline onto felt material.

The children then sewed three sides of two squares of felt together using a running stitch. We tried hard to ensure our stitches were the same in size and equally spaced so that our end product was as neat and tidy as possible.

Finally, we sewed our nature shapes onto the front of our cushion covers using our neatest running stitches possible. Many children found this to be the trickiest part as the task required a very steady hand!

Tomorrow we will stuff our cushion with scrap pieces of felt material and seal up the open side with a running stitch. The children are excited to take the finished product home to show their adults!

Year 3 Active Maths - Find the tenths

In Maths, we are learning about tenths. Today's lesson involved playing a game where we had to run to the tenths fraction cards on the floor then run back to our team, who then had to match the image to the fraction. We enjoy learning like this because it is fun and active!

Year 3 Science: Plant Dissection

We are learning about plants and in today's Science lesson we dissected flowers to identify functions of flowering plants. We identified the petals, leaf, stems, stamen, anther and pollen. We learned that plants pass on their pollen to insects in return for a sugary drink of nectar! We discovered that plants make their own food using the sun, carbon dioxide and water.

Year 3 discover Ancient Egypt

This week Year 3 have used different primary sources to learn about Ancient Egypt and the discovery of Tutankhamun. They used books and fact sheets to learn about their primary sources and then presented their findings to the rest of the class. They then learnt about Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb.

Food Tech Year 1- planning

First of all, we learned about differences between fruit and veg, thinking about where they grow. Then we looked at all the different parts of the plant that you can eat. Finally we had a taste test and chose our favourite vegetables. We designed a meal that has to be healthy and filling. Children completed a planning sheet.

Food Tech Year 1 - Making

Next, while some children helped prepare food, other children explored different aspects of food, linking to our History topic. Children learned about food hygiene and practised cooking skills and using cooking utensils. Children read and followed the recipe. They helped each other chop, blitz, open tins, strain legumes, prepare the packaging and wash up after.
