In Maths, Year 5 have been learning how to read Roman numerals by partitioning the number and then working from left to right to find the value.
We then moved onto looking at larger numbers by trying to create the Roman numerals for specific events in relating to our History topic:
450AD – Romans leave Britain
848AD – Alfred the Great born
1066AD – Battle of Hastings (end of Anglo-Saxon era)
2006AD – our version of Beowulf published
In class, the teacher read out a year and the children had one minute to work in group to try to write it in Roman numerals. When the time was up, one child from each group had to find the corresponding number card that was placed around the class. The first person to find it won a point for their team!
