Year 5 Elm Tree Science Investigation

As part of our Science learning, we have grown cress to show how we can grow a plant from a particular part (the seed) of a plant. 

Over the course of approximately 8 days, we observed  the seeds in two different places (inside and outside). 

The inside ones did well whereas the outside ones did not. 

Why do you think this happened? 

Would we need to change anything if we were to repeat the investigation?

With our fully grown cress, we made cucumber and cress sandwiches. They were delicious!

Year 5 Reward Trip to the Tate Modern

On the 13th March 2018, selected children from Year 5 went to the Tate Modern on a Reward Trip with Ms Sikkens to explore how we experience feelings through exploring art.


The main attraction was, of course, the Super Flex exhibition in the colossal Turbine Hall.

This exhibition is all about playing, cooperating and having fun together and consists of about 20 swings, with enough room for 3 to swing together.

In the other half of the Turbine Hall, when it was clear enough not to disturb members of the public, we rolled down the rainbow hill under the giant swinging pendulum!

We also went to the top of the viewing gallery to look at the London Skyline:

Finally, we looked at other art in the free exhibitions. The children couldn't believe that they were really standing in front of the actual works of art that had been created by some very famous and influential artists. Everybody recognised Matisse from a project in Year 3. Look at how BIG some of his original work is!

Kandinsky was also popular because his use of colour and shapes made everyone feel happy and playful.

Some art work was very new and had us staring at it for ages...

Some art was made by us by drawing into the orange carpet wall. It felt lovely and soft.

Of course, no trip would be complete without documenting the packed lunch!

Year 3 spent a morning at Plumstead Manor School learning different Playground Games from their Year 9 pupils. The children had great fun learning new games, finding out how to play and communicating with the older children.

Year 5 Elm - Science for International Day

We made panpipes - just like those from South America - to produce sounds of varying pitch.

Nursery Acorn Class - Plumstead Library

Acorn Class visited Plumstead Library. This time we attended the 'Messy pPay' session on Thursday 15th March 2018. Eric, the librarian, gave us resources to make our own butterflies. We thought it looked like the butterfly from the story Monkey Puzzle by Julia Donaldson. Conker Class AM will be visiting the library next Thursday.

Inter-school Netball Competition

On Tuesday 13th March Bannockburn participated in the latest round of a local inter-school netball competition, which is being held at St Paul's Academy. The team has been selected from both boys and girls in Years 5 and 6. The children worked well as a team, encouraging each other. Supporting the team, Miss Dadds from Nursery has been providing her expertise in being an effective netball player. The team will be next playing in two weeks time.

Nursery Acorn - International Day

As part of our 'International Day' activities, Acorn Class made Italian pizzas. We had a choice of healthy vegetables for toppings.





















Rose taught us some Jamaican nursery rhymes and Miss Dadds taught us some basic flamenco moves.

We had various learning choices linked to different countries, including writing numbers in Chinese and creating African necklaces.
