Exploring Chinese Music

Exploring Chinese Music

As part of Year 4's Shang Dynasty Topic, we have been exploring Chinese music through different types of instruments.

The children have been learning about the different classifications of musical instruments in China which include: wood, silk, gourd, stone, clay, bamboo, mental and skin.

To help them understand these classifications the children used boom sticks, glockenspiels, xylophones and bells to recreate the sounds of a Chinese folk song.

One child even used his violin to recreate the tune! The children really enjoyed this exploration and now have a much better understanding of the sounds used in this culture.

One Year 4 child said, "I was so excited to try different instruments and the Chinese music is so interesting."

This is all part of an on-going Shang Dynasty project, where the children are learning to build and create their own Chinese song/music.
