Year 5 Maple Explore The 'Unsinkable' Titanic Scientifically

To end this academic year, Year 5 Maple are learning about the Titanic through the subjects of Humanities, English and Science.

This week, we used our scientific knowledge on the properties of materials to determine whether they will sink or float. We began by using everyday objects, such as a pencil and paper towels. We made predictions to see whether each of these objects would float or sink, before testing them out.

Afterwards, we took part in an investigation where we had to make our very own Titanic, using clay. In an aim to make it truly unsinkable, we manipulated our clay by changing the shape and structure. As scientists, we ensured we made prediction before testing our clay Titanic ships and recorded the results. We used our results to improve our Titanic to make it float.
