As part of Maths Experience Week, some Year 5 children visited a local allotment site. They thought about how the plots were arranged and measured their size. It gave them plenty of ideas to try in school!
In one of the Year 5 groups, we used maps of the
Bannockburn Manor Way site to read and plot four-figure grid references, to
identify parts of the Nursery playground. Using compass directions to assess
the direction of sun we could identify which areas of the Nursery playground
received the most shade
We used ratio, perimeter and area to draw the
proposed allotment planters on a reduced scale, in order to plan the layout of
different vegetables and herbs. We estimated and calculated the capacity of the
planters and the volume of soil needed
Finally we calculated the likely costs (including
equipment) and whether the budget given would be sufficient.
