Safer internet day 2026

Today, 10th February, is Safer Internet Day. The theme this year is exploring the safe and responsible use of AI.

AI is becoming a greater part of daily conversation and it is becoming growingly important that children have the skills and confidence to make safe choices when they are in contact with smart technology.

Children who consistently talk about the digital space generally feel more confident on how to keep themselves safe. If something goes wrong, it’s also more likely they will bring the issue to you and ask for your help.

Data protection laws dictate that the minimum age on social media platforms is 13. While using the platforms under age does not break the law, it does leave children open to risks they might not know how to manage.

There are tools being developed that open up AI specifically to children. These include LittleLit, Zoe and Kids ChatGPT (which is not related to ChatGPT). Google is developing a Gemini for Kids in which parents can manage supervised accounts via Google family link.

If you would like any advice on customising AI to make it safe for children then please contact me via the school office.
