In Science this term, Year 5 have been learning about forces, including friction. Children conducted an investigation to test which surfaces would be best for sliding a puck in a shuffleboard game. Having generated hypotheses and predictions based on their learning about high and low friction, children worked in groups to select materials such as wood, cardboard, carpet and paper, measuring the distance travelled by the puck on each surface, and noting how quickly and easily it travelled. Children learned about types of variables, including the importance of controlled variables, such as how much force was used to slide the puck, to ensure the test was as fair as possible.
