This term in year 5, we have been Learning about the Second World War in Europe and why the Battle of Britain was such a significant turning point in British History.
As an introduction to this topic. During our first lesson, we explored World War II artefacts in an interactive pop-up museum. The children particularly enjoyed trying on gas masks. With this, we were able to use inference skills to determine what time period it was, explain our reasoning based on the sources, and apply our historical knowledge to the situation.
Throughout this term, we have enjoyed examining the timeline of key events such as the outbreak of the war, the Battle of Britain, the heroic rescue at Dunkirk, the Blitz, the D-Day landings and the celebrations of VE Day. Research the lives of the ordinary people on the Home Front who faced the Blitz and coped with rationing and evacuation.
