FREE FANTASTICALLY FUN DAYS OUT FOR ALL THE FAMILY WITH HERITAGE OPEN DAYS 2019

TAKE A TRIP OUT IN THE LOCAL AREA THIS SEPTEMBER TO ONE OF THESE FREE AMAZING EVENTS RUN BY HERITAGE OPEN DAYS

Prince Philip Maritime Collections Centre, Nelson Mandela Way, Kidbrooke, London, Greater London, SE3 9QS (Distance: 3 miles)

Home to Royal Museums Greenwich's collection and conservation team: Free tours telling the local community's maritime story. Set on the grounds of a former RAF base in Kidbrooke, The Royal Museums Greenwich store thousands of collections in the stores which once was a barrage balloon depot in the second world war. Visitors to the Prince Philip Maritime Collection Centre will see a contrast of architecture with our new state of the art stores and conservation studios next to the former RAF buildings. Despite storing the museum’s collection since the early 1970’s – members of the public have rarely had the chance to see the behind scenes. With the collection comprising of 2.5 million objects, the vast majority are kept in storage, generally out of public view. Many items are genuine treasures of the Museum, which can occasionally be shown in exhibitions but over the Heritage Open Days the public will be able to see this Aladdin’s cave of treasures.
As part of Heritage open days and the launch of our public facing programmes, we are embracing the theme of ‘People Power’ by supporting our local community groups to curate their own tours through our collection. Visitors will get a truly unique take on the store experience as local groups select items from the collection, which tell a story about their heritage or back ground.
As well as the tours, visitors will be able to join in our community celebrations (21st September), which will consist of performances and activities arranged by participating groups.

The Deptford Ragged School Archive is a collection of 175 years worth of photos and documents that tell the story of the Deptford Ragged School and the part it played in the community of Deptford. Drop in to explore this fascinating collection. Discover the history of the Deptford Ragged School and its impact in the local community over the past 175 years. Explore and handle original documents, annual reports, minutes, crockery, certificates, letters, photos and architectural plans, uncovering their stories.
We will also be running a family activity sharing your school memories.
The Deptford Ragged School was founded in 1844, twenty-seven years before the State began providing education for all children. It was started in a loft over a cowshed as a Day School and a Sunday School. As many children as possible were crammed into a rented room to learn how to read and write, and very often to be fed too. It was one of the first twenty ragged schools exclusively run for 'ragged children', so called because they were dressed in rags with bare feet in all weathers.
We are currently documenting the archive, making it publicly available hoping to become an accredited museum, and we’re keen to share what we’re finding with the community.
