Year 5: Maths Experience Week

Last week, Year 5 took part in Maths Experience Week. We were given the topic of Sports Day. We had to plan for this using a range of maths skills. Our first task was to measure the perimeter of the playground so that we could calculate the area and plan whether our chosen events would fit. We used trundle wheels to measure the lengths of the playground and then added them up.

The following day we calculated the area of the playground and decided that we had enough space for 6 events. We then had a class vote to see which events were most popular so we could include those. We tallied up the votes and represented this information in a bar chart.

Sports Day needs equipment and for a subsequent activity we had to buy the equipment we needed for our events. However, we could not spend freely as we had a budget to stick to. We used our addition and subtraction skills to stay within budget. We had a great week and learned about how maths is involved in everyday life! We also cannot wait for Sports day!
