December 3rd is
International Day of Disabled Persons.
How
well does our immediate area in Plumstead accommodate the needs of the visually
impaired and wheelchair users? Society needs to show tolerance when thinking about the needs of those with disabilities;
is Plumstead doing enough? Children from the Rights Respecting and Values
Community Partnership Groups took a look for themselves…
·
Road
names have raised lettering. This could help visually impaired people know
where they are
·
Ramps
and railings to enable wheelchair-users and those unstable on their feet to
access the green near St. Nicholas’ Church.
·
Tiles
with bumps near on kerbs to help warn partially-sighted people they are
approaching a road
·
A
ramp leading into the gate entrance of Bannockburn Primary school (Church
Manor Way)
|
Places where improvements could be made
·
Shop doorways with steps
could have ramps and even automatic doors
·
Poles
(to stop parking)(in Lakedale Road) are too close to the edge of the kerb where bumps are; this
could be hazardous for visually-impaired people.
·
Trees
on pathways could have flowers planted around them so that the scent of them
could be a clue that a tree is there. This would benefit blind people.
