Year 6 Graffiti Art - Birch

In Art we have been looking at ways to create graffiti art to convey a message. We explored what chiaroscuro meant to create our art. The word chiaroscuro comes from Italian, meaning light and dark. It is used to describe drawings or paintings where the main feature is dramatic light and shade. Chiaroscuro helps make drawn or painted objects look more three-dimensional and realistic. The technique has been used by many artists, including Da Vinci, Caravaggio and Vermeer. Da Vinci used charcoal and chalk to create areas of dark and light. Inspired by his work, we looked at using oil pastels to create different shades to show the effects of lights and shadows. We used masking tape to write our message and then cover the page in our chosen colour, paying attention to areas that were lighter/darker.
