On Thursday the children in Year 6 Elm practised their cooking skills whilst preparing some delicious healthy soup. Using onions, sweet potatoes, chillies and a whole host of other ingredients, the children worked collaboratively to produce enough soup to feed an army!

Achievement Assembly at Manor Way
Congratulations to all the children who were celebrated in today's Achievement Assembly on the Manor Way site.
Poetic Rappers in the making! Year 5 and 6 Able Writers Day
Today, some very lucky children from Years 5 and 6 took part in an Able Writers Day!
We were very lucky to work with poetic rapper Rob Bradley.
We began the day by learning all about how Rob was inspired to become a poet and rapper and we discovered that he was also an incredible freestyle poet as he performed for us using 40 words we chose at random! We were very impressed!
We managed to find 110 words that rhymed with door!
In the afternoon, we put our creative juices to the test and created poetic raps that consisted of 8 lines and 4 beats in each line. We found making the words fit a rhythm the trickiest part!
Towards the end the day, we all performed our poetic raps in front of each other! We were very brave!
Thank you Rob for a creative and inspiring day! You even gifted us one of your new poetry books.
We hope to see you again soon!

As the day continued, we learnt the techniques for creating our own rhythmic poet by looking at rhyming words and how you can build a bank of vocabulary to inspire you!

Mini Chef - Year 2!
Year 2 have enjoyed cooking healthy meals during our Mini Chef sessions this term!
So far Acer class has cooked butternut squash ravioli and Sycamore’s Indian Soup went down a treat last week! Mrs Curtis even helped in Cedar to cook a dish inspired by her Cyprus roots!
Look out for Beech Class’ Mini Chef this Friday. They are cooking a tasty vegetable curry!
The meals we cook are easy to follow and are of good value. Do let us know if you try cooking them again at home!

Food technology in Year 5
Each week a group of Year 5 pupils have been doing some cooking in our Community Kitchen with Mrs Medlock and Mrs Peek.
This Tuesday the children were learning about how to create some tasty (but healthy) coverings for chicken. Before touching any of the food items the children washed their hands thoroughly and made sure they were all wearing hair nets.
Using fresh chicken, breadcrumbs, corn flakes and other ingredients, the children created and cooked some healthy chicken nuggets.

Guitar Assembly
Guitar Assembly
Years 3 and 4 were treated to a special assembly this week. Our KS2 guitar pupils performed for them, supported by our guitar teacher - Mr Black.
We were so impressed by the children's focus and professionalism when they performed.

Be Bright Be Seen - JTA assembly for Road Safety Week 2019
Winter
is almost here. The weather is getting worse and daylight is lasting less and
less time. When we come to school in the morning, it’s dark. When we go home
from school in the afternoon, it’s dark. That’s why you need to Be Bright, Be
Seen.
It’s
part of our uniform to have thick warm winter coats. But did you know…..they
don’t have to be black, navy or dark colours…. In fact … we, your JTA team, are
encouraging you to be bright and be seen!
To
make yourself visible to cars, you can wear fluorescent coats, hats, scarves
and bags to help stand out. These colours stay bright in the darkness and so
will help you stay safe whilst out and about. Reflective
clothing will make you shine so you become visible to drivers in the headlights
and under streetlights at crossing points. Even a small, thin reflective strip
on your coat or bag can help keep you visible at night.
There are 5 other important things we want to remind you to keep you safe:
1. Never walk alone in areas where there are no streetlamps or people – keep to the busy, main roads and areas.
2. Don’t use headphones whilst out walking – you need to stay alert and be able to hear!
3. Keep your valuables, like mobile phones, in a safe place like a pocket – don’t get it out unless you really have to!
4. Walk carefully and sensibly around the streets – leaves can be very slippery at this time of year!
5. Remember to cross at the designated crossings like at traffic lights, and use the Green Cross Code: Stop, Look, Listen, Think.
Here is the specially-written JTA poem you heard in the assembly:
Be
Bright Be Seen
Wear Yellow, Orange, Pink or Green
Fluorescent colours make you stand
out
In the dark evenings, when you’re out
and about.
Reflective materials allow drivers to
see you
When their headlights shine you come
into view
If you need more advice, ask your JTA team
Remember, this Winter - BE BRIGHT AND
BE SEEN!
