Humanist visitor in Year 5

Over the last half term, Year 5 have been learning about humanism in RSE and on Tuesday 15th October, humanist speaker, Philip Emery, visited Bannockburn and spoke to Year 5 about what being a humanist means to him.

He told us that as a humanist, he believes in scientific investigation and evidence rather than the existence of a god or gods. Humanists use the golden rule to help them with decision making.

‘Treat other people as you'd want to be treated in their situation.’

‘Do not treat others in a way you would not like to be treated yourself.’

Children in Year 5 came up with some fascinating and inciteful questions for Philip, including:

Where do you worship if you don't go to church?

What do you believe happens to you after you die?

At religious ceremonies like weddings and christenings, do you pray?

It was a very interesting, thought-provoking talk and was the perfect way to round off our Humanism topic.
