Year 6 - Philosophy for Children (P4C)

The staff at Bannockburn recently took part in some fantastic training on how Philosophy for Children (P4C) can be used in any subject to promote respectful discussion and critical thinking.

So far, Year 6 have include P4C in their English lessons and Personal Development lessons.

This week, in Personal Development, we have been thinking about why children and teenagers might be exploited to commit a crime. This led us to generate some 'Big Questions' about crime in general.

Here are some of the 'Big Questions' that the children generated, along with comments made during the sessions:

Big Questions

'What would the world be like if all crime was legal?'

'How can people show courage in difficult situations?'

'How would you feel if you were forced to commit a crime?'

'What might happen if you were caught?'

'Is it ever OK to commit a crime/violent act?'

'How would you feel if someone escaped punishment for a crime?'

'If people know committing crimes is wrong, why do they do it?'

Comments from the children (stemming from the Big Question 'What would the world be like if all crime was legal?')

"Without laws, people would change; people could become greedy or frightened all the time."

"If crime was legal, some parents wouldn't send their children to school as they wouldn't think it was necessary."

"Punishment is necessary so poeple can learn their lesson and would never become better people."

"Without punishment, crime rates would rise."

"If all crime was legal, the world would be a chaotic and not nice place to live."

"If there were no Police, life could be easier as you could do what you want and get money. It would also be dangerous."

"It would be hard to survive and trust people as you wouldn't know their intentions."

"Our population would decrease drastically."

"Lots of people would lost their jobs like Police Officers and shop owners so life as we know it would end."
