Y6 Birch Creating Tectonic Plates for Geography

In Geography, Year 6 have been learning about how the Earth's tectonic plates can move to form different features by recreating this movement using some crackers and shaving foam.

Can you spot which of the images are showing the following?

1. Mountain ranges - divergent plates separating - plates move away from each other and magma can rise and solidify.

2. Volcanoes - convergent plates colliding - one plate is pushed under the other and pressure can force magma out at other areas.

3. Earthquakes - transform plates sliding and separating - plates slip and grid or separate.

The children were able to used this information to describe different physical features along the Pacific Ring of Fire.
